View Full Version : Moi3d first car!
3DArtZ 09-24-2008, 10:04 PM Hey guys,
so Ive been using moi3d as of late and felt pretty comfortable with it that I wanted to start
a complex(for me) model.
Typically I would use a subd modeler like Silo, but am trying to sharpen my skills with a solids modeler.
Anyhows, its just the front of the car, but couldnt resist doing some renders!
in EI ofcourse:)

Very nice!
SInce you went solids over SDS, care to comment on what tools within the Moi arsenal you are using? Nurb surface tools, etc.?

Hey thanks for the reply guys!
Nibeck, I created the basic shape with the net surface tool(the network tool button).
I drew a profile wire in the side, top and front windows.
if you could imagine, from the top window, an open wire that followd from one side to the front of the car, back to the other side.
the side view, an open wire from the front of the car, along the hood to the dash board area...
the front veiw was a closed wire that approximatly was the shape/size of the car near the front doors.
all the wires touched and I use the network tool button to create the shape.... then I just started cutting it up with wires. fillet tool worked flawlessly!
Hey MartinK, I must have missed the freebie version, I had to pay for mine! :)
It was free while it was in beta and I do believe that there is a 30day trial version... I think....
if you're on a pc, its definatly worth trying out!

HI 3DArtZ,
These is a nice model so clean and sharp. Looks like all the polys are in the right place and with Curves is simple amazing now i need to download the trial too bad is not for the Mac but is it memory hungry Mike? I mean can you see your self with 256 MB modeling this type of models?
Anyhow excellent modeling.
Thanks,
Edgard.

That's looking great!! Very impressive. I even like the interface. Can't beat free!?
It looks like NURBS not polys?
ediris

What did you use to render your image? Since almost all the render engines including Maya converts the Nurbs into Polys. That is why i like NET Surfaces. Gonna give it a try this week

After playing a bit with the demo i didnt understand the software. I like the exporting of STL files, but once i get to know it a bit better i find it simple and powerful not yet ready to model a car :) ,is very difficult to use.Unless i am missing something here.
I honestly thought it was more common knowledge software. I donot know if it has to be that is based on ACIS technology or dont know how to model anymore :)

Hi guys,
thanks for the comments left on the thread here.
I have not had as much time as I wanted to build this car, but its moving along!
I started a new and decided to build the whole body and chop it up as I go insead of building panel by panel... hey I'm still learning MOI3d!
Ediris, Moi3d is like any new software... it takes a while to get the hang of it.
Here is where I am on the model.... cant wait to get it finished so I can start messing with EI and Camera!

Hey,
Very nice! Is the tread a bump map or geometry. Not that it matters, since it's working either way. Keep posting as you work on this. It's fun to see it develop.

hey Craig, thanks for the reply.
the tread on the tire is actual geometry.
Once I fillet'd the edges it really slowed down MOI3d so I'm keeping the
tread and the tire as seperate moi files, until I export.
Will keep posting as I go.

Great job on the car...those are some nice looking tires you have there!
MOI is a pretty good deal and I probably should just get it for it's meshing capabilities. From what I've seen, much cleaner than Rhino's.

I really dont see what you mean miseka, bt i tell you what i like NURBS and i think i havent have access to them cause i got involved into SubD surfaces, since one of the only modelers i have in my arsenal is EIM and that is not a great NURBS modeler.
Now Maya NURBS are one of the best i have ever seen.Precision is the key for me. Moi looks like when mastered can do that kind of job. But as cheapest the software the hardest it gets to be mastered. Just take a look at Blender modeling tools.
The thing is that i need a quick eay to bring my models into a new system i am working with called VizRT. I am trying out with C4D but it doesnt seem to work with my textures so i might pass the modeling into Moi.

Bye
Miseka, thanks for the post! I have not had a chance to work on the car this week.
Hopefully something by the end of the weekend.
In order to get MOI3d models into EI.
1. in MOI exporter, select obj and uncheck "weld vertices"
2. use quads/triangles..... NOT NGons.
3. Open in Transporter with all options unchecked.
4. Negate Z.
5. Save as fact.
that's what I do and it comes in perfect everytime..... with groups intact.

I'm enjoying watching your progress.
Once you've added the details and textures,
this should become quite impressive.

Hey guys,
I think that major modelling has been finished. I have to go back and export again
and add some windshield wipers...
but in the meantime, I tried using the hdri option for global refection,
my first time using it in EI(I know, embarrassed to say after all this time using EI!).
any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've tried a bit more with the hdri stuff in EI... most of my results are coming from
accidents/learning curve at this point with the hdri system.

Excelent,
Take a look in my HDRI pdf tutorial on EIAS 7 DVD.
Have nice tricks..
You did a fantastique model and you are playing with HDRI now.. next step is integrate more CGI and a real background.
Like, Color correction (Levels in each channel, Less saturation), some scratches in the car surface (bump and specular), some grain.. color correction in the shadows to mix better in the floor).
Really congrats

Hey Richard and Tomas! thanks for the posts and commnets.
Very much appreciated.
I have to say that using the hdri on a sphere is a pretty funny thing...
I mean you can pretty much move the camera all over the place and
if you have a shadow mask on the floor, it looks, just about, visually correct....
I didnt really get into reading much on the tutorials, but will check them out
now.... I usually shoot first then ask questions :) for better or worse!
