Rather than play necromancer with my old thread which was full of shocking anatomy, I figured I'd start a new one as I have the momentous news of having finally attended a life drawing session! woo hoo!

The life drawings are first... top left are 3 mins, top right 10 mins,
and bottom is 30 mins, and 2 x 20 mins form left to right. I only had an A4 sketch pad and an HB pencil to hand as it was a last minute decision straight form work, but next week I go properly armed with much softer leaded pencils. Working my way up to newsprint and charcoal... I have to face my schooltime demons of hating charcoal! If anyone has any tips or methods they've tried in life drawing sessions, please feel free to share... this session isn't tutored at all, and I'd love to try out different techniques.
And I've thrown in some other anatomy fun that I've been doing in the meanwhile too!

HEY...SPIRIT WIND...:wavey: LONG TIME NO SEE..:) GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK HERE:applause: ...I MISSED THE INSPIRATION I GOT FROM SEEING YOUR WORK..:)

Besides charcoals on newsprint,...you might try your hand at using conte crayons on large newsprint..you can get some really beautiful results with it, and it's a fast result...use the side of the crayon,..it gives you a really nice crisp outter edge with a nice soft blend off of that hard edge, all in one stroke...As you use the crayon, it developes a nice point that is great for putting in accent lines here and there towards the end of the drawinging session, to streghten edges ect...Burne Hogarth was the best at it..In his class, he would whip out whole figures..life size,...shaded, with volume ect...all in a couple of minutes, using that edge technique that I decribed above using conte crayon...The reddish color crayon I think looks the best on newsprint.
Anyway..GREAT to have you back SPIRIT WIND, and really looking forward to seeing where you take this new thread to..
TAKE CARE

Hi Sam

Rebecca's thread is the place to be to learn about charcoal sketching... I believe she has a tutorial on her blog as well... check out her sig, think there are links to find there.

Welcome back!

Thanks for the warm welcome back guys! And thanks for the tips Glenn, conte crayon sounds like it would be just right for me, I'll have to go mooching for the art store in Cambridge this weekend and get some.

Phrenzy84: yup, all watercolor, painted from a still of the BBC's Scarlet Pimpernel production.

Hi,

I never really used charcoal until last year in this life drawing class. We used charcoal on newsprint, mostly for gesture drawing. Had some interesting results and it inspired me to do this huge charcoal drawing... which probably finished half a box of them. :)
Anyway, charcoal is fun you should play around with it. Nice work, hope to see some more!
