Don't know about later versions.

3dmax can run on win98 (second edition) with no problem...
Only issue is that you can not open more then one document at a time.
And you have to install explorer 5 and above.. which comes with the amx install pack.

It can run but it isn't recommended because of the instability of the OS. NT, Win2000 or WinXP are the best choice.

Max does run on Win98se. However only one max app can run at a time and net rendering is not available.

Oktavian: actually, i believe NT4 is no longer supported as of max 5. or at least the net render stuff doesn't work. or at least it doesn't work on the one NT4 machine we have at work...and i think i looked it up on discreets site and found that it was no longer supported :\
maybe i'm wrong though, and if thats teh case, anyone know how to get it to run on NT4, as i've got a dual amd 2000+ system that i could use for rendering if i could get it to work :buttrock:

The overall speed difference between max on win98 and win2k/XP is quite large. Somewhat like getting a computer with twice the grunt as the original!

You shouldn't use windows 98 in the first place. There is no justification for it.
Max will "work", but when you run into your first problem everyone will tell you to switch to an NT-based OS.

i think none of you ever tried to pay yourselves for an OS
I can understand why he wants to run on w98...
In fact.. i am running max (and a lot of other apps) on win98 machine.and never had problems.
it is more important to save for a good open-gl based graphic card and not the os itself..

I think those who pay for max can afford to pay for an OS.

just because win98 is not new, it doesn't mean it cant run 3ds. you're saying you'll be having problems with it, and wish to run it on something newer. people are having problems running 3ds on winxp too, but you dont tell them to switch to something older than new nt or 2000, you just try to solve the problem, when most of them dont get solved at all. why? because its the newest os yet, and everything should run on it, and you try to fix it. i'm saying that many many people run 3ds on win98, and dont have problems with it at all.... but for those who do.... compare them with ppl running xp/2000 and 3ds... practically similar. its just luck it runs on anything.

I've tested it on win98 Win ME and WinXp Pro,
DO NOT: install Win ME or Win XP over a partition if 3ds max is installed, make sure you unistall it and CDILLA or else you'LL have to reformat all the hard drives...Believeme it sux.
