View Full Version : impressions of Photoshop CS4
PerryDS 09-23-2008, 02:33 PM The new CS4 suite is out and I was reviewing the 3D paint capabilities of the new photoshop. Hard to determine whether it has any value because from the demo, it shows very little.
Currently I use Bodypaint, and I can see any features in the new photoshop that could come anywhere close to bodypaint on features.
Anyone else have views on this?

Anyway the 3D capabilities are not anywhere near Bodypaint's.
However the thing i liked is the seam carving and rotational canvas. A great addition to photoshop.

They also added new brush resizing functions instead of the [ ] keys ...that and rotation will be nice.

I've been using CS4 for about six months now (I beta test for Adobe), so I've had a lot of use out of it, and frankly the 3D module, as it is now, is still pretty useless from a production standpoint. It's definitely a step in the right direction, but it has a long way to go before it's a viable alternative to Bodypaint.
I love some of the other new features though, like the new layer mask options, the canvas rotation and a few other bits and bobs - small features that make a big difference in your day to day work.

So leigh, I've got a question for you seeing as how you beta tested it.
So I myself am thinking of updateing my home licence to CS4, and now that there is an "Extended" option, I have to ask, do you think the tool sets in the extended option make it worth the extra cost? Or should I just stick with the core unit.
Also, (I haven't had to deal with this till now.) When you pay for the "upgrade" version, can it upgrade older versions of PS that aren't CS3? I myself am running CS at home, So I'm just wondering if the upgrade can update my older license of CS, or do I have to have a CS3 licence for me to qualify for the "upgrade" cost?

Frankly, no. I'd say that the 3D painting, while a step in the right direction, still has a long way to go and isn't really worth the extra cost right now, unless you have the cash lying around.

Ermmm to be honest, I am not entire sure. I suspect you'd be able to, but you'll have to contact Adobe directly for the right answer, I'm afraid.

I have a small question about the 3D painting capabilities - does it have the full tool palette available when you are painting in 3d? As in smudge, blur, burn and dodge? Can you use all of the yummy brushes that you have in Photoshop? I haven't tried it yet and I want to be sure before throwing any money at it.
