umm.. right.. As a total newbie on the boards, I don't really know what to expect.. A friend of mine wants me to take part in the challenge as he himself is in it..

Don't expect anything cool from me, I like to start off with no expectations.

I'm just starting this thread so I can throw ideas into it.

Character Ideas:

male - ..... nah.. All the male ideas will be super stereotypical big buffed body and a small head.. unless... hmm..

female - big tits? nopers.. elven thingy? nah.. I think I'd take inspiration of kawaii anime girls, an energetic bouncing ball of happiness..

Vehicle - vehicle? should someone buy a game because of a vehicle? The only vehicle I'd say people found cool was the Halo vehicle, and that was because of its wayy cool shock absorber thingy.. i.e. in-game-style.. lemme think.. starwars pod-racer, now that was a cool vehicle game.. The selling point was that you was racing in the starwars pods.. but still, the vehicles were cool.. Perhaps a really spaced out, over-exaggerated surfing-air-board with guns.. no skip the guns.. stupid wimpy lasers which don't really hurt anyone, just slow the other vehicles down or some such.

Environment - when has the environment been a selling point in a game? Myst? I thought myst sucked, so I don't want to think about that.. Well, the environment in EVE is cool, and you really aren't doing anything BUT interacting with it.. but that's too.. bleh.. space is done.. jungles.. nah.. scarred Dirt roads through pinewood forests? A dexter's laboratory style shiphangar with starwars (ep 4) dirt on it...yeah..

Actually, I like all of it! I'll start sketching everything I like over the weekend.. hope those art classes I've had will pay off...

I'm looking over some of the work here, and it's great! Keep on going guys, love to see how much some people are working over this (U have no life btw ;) )

Anyways, sketching didn't go as planned, Although I can draw 'real' faces and images, the anime-style-face is hard to do, so I had to grab my "how to draw anime" books and go through the faces.

It was fun, and I sorta got the characters the way I wanted.

Here are the details on what I'm planning:

Character #1 - Aya-chan
The best way to describe this girl is energy, big eyes, big smile, fun hair, and more like a girl than a woman. Healthy bouncy girl.

Character #2 - Dad
A thin scientist with big glasses, nice face, and always being surprised by his daughter, aya-chan. Configures stuff for her, like her air-board.

Item #1 - Air-board.
A snowboard-like item with a steering wheel (optional) which can shoot laserblasts at stuff (doesn't hurt, just gets blown out of the way). Uses rotor motors which are heavily miniaturized. Controls are either in the steering wheel, or by using it like a snow-board.

I'm thinking that as a game you would be controlling the girl as she is having fun in a race flitting around on the air-board, using the harmless laser to bump other characters, and relying on speed, maneuverability and a few fancy tricks.

Winning the first race means her father looks at the little girl as his meal-ticket, and asks her if she is ready to go for the big races with the big money, and in great anime style, she is more than willing for she is: The super-style surfing girl!

The game would be two-fold, depending on what you want to do. You could focus solely on the racing part, using the air-board as a vessel to win big bucks, against really big and nasty guys with dirty tricks up their sleeves. You can let 'dad' upgrade the air-board with some of the money, or buy a tv and cable to see the other races where you can see the dirty tricks the other racing-dudes are using and the monsters sometimes unleashed on the tracks, even buying yourself into testing the track before racing to get the upper edge (sometimes other racers are also checking out the track at the same time, and you can wager with them which will win, a small personal bet, which will not affect track-record, just street-cred.

The second part (which are short things inbetween races) is where you play the part of 'dad' where he bargains a better price for new or used items, where he contacts the other racers to see if they won't sell him their used items (using the TV- if that is bought and seeing who crashed and who didn't, and going to the persons who crashed) buying the items cheap, but in need of some repair. Also he can ask the racing manager if anyone has bought a test-drive for the day, and then go with Aya-chan and increase the bets between the slight audience (not only between aya-chan and the other racer). 'Dad' can then also sneak into the other guy's camp (similar to walking into it and asking for parts) and sabotage either the vehicle or stealing the parts.

aw man.. I'd love to be able to take this idea to a software company.. It's so fresh in my mind with lots of other cool things.. anyway, tonight I will keep on modeling the air-board and characters. hopefully I'll be able to throw up basics tonight.

Here's a small picture of the air-board.. it's still in its infancy.

Ihttp://www.pc.is/maya/cg-challenge/cg-challenge002.jpg

I don't like the width of the steering stick, and lots of tubing and detail is missing, and I need to make it look like the board itself and stick are welded together, but the basic layout is there..

I'm having a little problem inserting isoparms into the upper part of the head of the stick.. that's the main 'problem' I'm facing right now.

The lower part of the stick and the big box are the motors I talked about, the motor under the stick is used to bost the air-board into the high skies, and the box is the forward acceleration. There will be tubing going from the stick to the rear-box, welded-looking plates and wiring will hold the box to the board, and rings and fasting will go on the rims to fasten Aya-chan to the board (so she doesn't fly off when doing loop-de-loops).

The steering stick will give the board more balance than without, but it's generally making the board heavier and more sluggish than without the stick. But the plus is that a laser (non-lethal) is on the front of it.

Without the stick the board is 1.5 times as fast, and way more sensitive to movement of the player and the environment.

hmm.. why am I sharing this information? I dunno.. :)
