View Full Version : Wing Membrane
Hi I am trying to rig a dragon's wing but only to encounter a huge problem
I was trying to achieve the folding like in this picture from a sculpture of a drake from Reign of Fire.

Attached below is a scene from my testing in 3ds max and the dragon I am rigging.

this would be so easy in maya using nurbs-influences:]
you can fake it in max a bit through Mesh Select + Skin Wrap combination. what you can do is create a MUCH lower resolution,one-sided mesh that, when smoothed, matches wing's geometry, and then skinwrap wing to that low resolution mesh. the point of doing that is that you can smoothly skin low resolution mesh much easier than a high resolution one.
here's an example of what i'm talking about, sorry about the wing model but it only took me few minutes to model:D i've added wing contracting animation in this example.

I tried your way but I applied your concept to my one.

Howdy,
Have you considered using a cloth simulation for the wing membrane?
Here is a thread where using cloth for a dragon wing was discussed:
