View Full Version : Particles from Max to Maya?

Hey all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with using 3ds Max to do particle simulations, and rendering them in Maya?

Maya is my 3d package of choice, but I love Pflow and find it so much easier to use, and get the results I expect.

So are there any ways to get particles from Max to Maya? FBX maybe? Possibly the realflow exporter/importer?

Any hints, tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.

And any information about how to deal with the actual rendering of them in Maya would be excellent. If they're imported using the realflow plugin, can I light and shade them like I normally would with Maya Particles? Can I use them to affect the flow of fluids? Can I shade them with fluids?

Thank you for your time.

Try to use Frantic Films Krakatoa to export your Pflow particles simulation in realflow bin files, and the import in Maya with realflow plugin. I try that and that work fine...

as far as i know,fbx is not working on particles(not %100sure,so i don't insist)
with realflow yes you can bring your particles. but not sure again that, you can bring all the attributes you've created in pflow. for example opacity, radius changing due to lifespan probably would not have been transfered. and your particles would probably cast only a single color, as you can't read lifespan. it was couple of years back from now, my last attempt on to use realflow plugin to send houdini particles to maya. yes you have the motion. but you don't have all of the attributes to play with, that make a sim realy a sim. but today may be someone offers an actual solution.

Thank you for your suggestions.

IgorFX using that process, can you shade the particles properly in Maya? And any chance you can write up a more definite process for exporting from Krakatoa? I'll seriously look into a license if I think its worth it.

Keep the suggestions coming!

I'll second that. Please, do tell more!

Well after you export the bin file or find the realflow maya dynamics import plug in,and to do that you will have to download latest trial version, then it gives access to the .mypc import export. If you dont want to do anything inside realflow,it will load up the maya scene file, and place them in a folder as.mypc 01,02,03.

open max ,import just the particles then use any plug in you have to use them inside max.

just be carefull of scene scale if your gonna muck around in rf,so it comes into max like it did out of maya.

you can go back and forth as you c fit.

All your doing is importing and exporting particles, cant take any other information into max or maya,so im aware of.
Also depending on you scene size and particle count, you are gonna have to wait for rf to render in each frame on import.
FBX or Polytrans does not do dynamics as im aware of as well

Thank you for your suggestions.
