Elliotjnewman 06-05-2003, 08:35 PM I dont like the Maya bevel tool. Can anyone link me to a script or plug-in that is better than the original bevel tool? I ve had a quick look on Highend3d and have tried one from there but couldnt get it working...
Thanks, Elliot.

What are you trying to do exactly? Where has the Maya bevel failed you?

Take a look at Zaxwerk´s ProModeler. It´s the new incarnation of the Invigorator plug-in, now as a stand alone applecation which can generate models for Maya.

Ive already created the models in Maya so I dont particularly want to create them in a stand alone. The maya Bevel is creating faces inbetween the edges I bevel thus creating some real nasty shading artifacts...

do you have keep faces together turned on?

i havent seen anything for this, i have seen countless posts for a good bevel. i dont think there is anytying out there yet. as far as going to another 3d package to it, that ...well sorry, maybe check highend, i think there is a bevel script over there.

sucks to do it this way, but sometimes faster, especially on complex models. export to obj or dxf, import into another package. maybe one of the free ones. bevel in there and then bring it back into maya. a lot faster than sifting through and cleaning up the garbage that maya's bevel creates.

Wings 3D (http://www.wings3d.com/) has a nice interactive bevel like Mirai and Nendo. It exports/imports to obj format as well which works just fine.

Yeah I have keep faces together but it makes no difference maya is still creating the poly faces inbetween the edges I bevel... i tried that wings 3d but as i said i dont want to export and import between two progs.

whats wrong with importing\exporting to wings 3d?
I think you should reconsider cause there is no solution to the bevel in maya. (other than manual cleanup)

whats wrong is that you've spent all this cash on Maya... and spent hours and hours and days and days learning to use it... you would like to make a bevel with IT.
not have to go download some other tool and then spen more hours learning to use that too.
why can this problem not be solved in Maya? what is it missing that every other 3d program under the sun has??

well wings 3d is a free software and the learning curve is literally less than an hour so it should be a viable option ;)

well, no one to date has come up with a fix for this. so the best way is to export, let another program do it correctly and then re-import. in the mean time, feel free send reminders, maybe even with some nice screen shots, to AW support each time you have a problem with their bevel tool. maybe, eventually, they'll get the hint.
one other thing do, if the surface isn't too uneven, is make connections on both sides of an edge. slide those connections towards the center edge and then delete the center edge, leaving a bevel.
