I am currently studying animation and the Guildhall at SMU. I was look for some advice or critique and a few animations I have done. They are all first pass and still need to be polished. Basically I ahve just blocked out the movement.

The first is a walk animation.

Last and certainly least, a lift animation. The movement is subtle. I was trying to animate force and weight, but I think I need to change the pose and find something more dynamic.

Update to balance animation. Tried to make him more wobbly than the last pass.

Hi Amy, good start on your animations, but I really suggest that you should find a way to film yourself doing these actions as video reference. When you do that, you'll realize the poses that your body makes. For a weight lift, really lift something heavy, not pretend, so that your body actually reacts to that weight.

Right now with your weight lifts and throws, the character's spine doesn't really react as it should. Watch the awesome webinar that Shawn Kelly did back in April (The one at the bottom). In it, he mentions his blocking process, and how he uses video reference. I know it sure has helped me a lot with understanding the blocking phase.

One small note is that could you render these out with a lighter background color? Right now the black shadows cause the character to be eaten away by the black background.

Keep improving and just animate, animate, animate! :)

Thanks Derekkent.

I appreciate the advice. I actually used photo reference for all of these animations, it's hard to find an actor to not over exaggerate the movement. I left the minor spline movements out leaving it for polish. I'm still learning though. My walk animation needs a lot of work.

And great idea about the background features. I completely forgot about that when I posted them. I will be aware of that on the next animations I post.

Hello Amy Johnson

I have some critics on your 'jumping/hanging' animation, i think that's missing a good antecipation , before the character jumps, 'cause he 's swinging, but there isn't too much force applied to it

here 's some points that i've noticed :
*the spine is straight , if you put some arcs on it.... it will fell more flexible
*his arms also, if the spine is bending , the arms have to follow it
*the COG is just stopped the whole animation, notice that the only, movement is in the 'Y' axis, and a few on the X (when the character is swinging), it this good to feel the balance of the character , on the movement of the COG.
*and there is something strange , when the character jumps, it feels that is 'dragged up', by some force, not because his jump, and the acceleration, is a little bit odd.
*the Follow-through when he's swinging....it is strange too....

*notice the antecipation, before any jump that the acrobat does and how the spine bend....

and i agree with derek, watch as many references as possible before the animation, your animation will be more realistic ( even it is cartoony style) , 'cause the foundation of the human movements is there. The youtube is a excellent source and of course the animation mentor ( students video and webnar).

The jump and hang animation seems a bit stiff - not really sure if that's the right word, but it seems more like he is magnetically pulled to the bar, rather than he jumps up to it. It might have to do w/the anticipation thing Istagallus mentioned - I'm not quite sure.

The moment the character flops into the chair in the drinking animation is really nice. The actual drinking seems a bit subtle right now.
