What is the most sensible way to create a walk/run/etc cycle?

I followed the Digital Tutors method for a while which is to layer all the parts, starting with setting contact to contact on the legs then adding side to side and rotation on hips then overlap on the back/chest/head then swinging the arms, etc, using spline the whole time and cleaning curves as you go along. From videos that I've seen on you tube, animation mentor seems to teach people to block the stages in using linear and clamped tangents. and I read a tutorial on the internet where he was blocking contact to contact, full poses with arm positions and everything.

It makes sense to me that you should block walks in with no spline curves compromising your initial idea, but it doesnt seem to blend well with the process I learned from DT, so how do you guys do it, and what is the most agreed process?

Thanks,

Matt.
