Moore said that, when meeting with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer before taking the job, the discussion touched upon the issue of acquiring rival console maker Nintendo, even if the main goal was to crush Sony.
The hard drive in every Xbox killed us; we we're still selling it at $199 and the hard drive was like $70. That's why we prematurely left the original Xbox, because the more we were selling – there was still great demand – it was killing us, and there was no way to bring the price down. So in the end we determined at around the 25 million unit mark that we just needed to slow this thing down and just not sell any more, and move to the 360 as quickly as we possibly could. And to this day people still believe we left the Xbox too early but it was purely for financial purposes.

Knowing Nintendo's attitude to third party developers I could never see this happenig, not successfully anyway!

I have a question: Why the fuss over such large Harddisk drives on a games console? According to Wiki(lol, what else, eh?) the Xbox had 8-10GB for its hard drive, but even back in 2002, a 5GB harddrive would have been more than enough. Even against the DreamCast, PS2 and GameCube - it was something that the competition simply didnt have, so why be silly and ramp up the cost of the machine for the sake of it?
I am not a hardware guru by any means but if the Wii is doing well on just 512mb then I'm sure a standard of 40-50 GB on either XBox or PS3 will do just nicely. Because all Sony and Microsoft is doing, by releasing different models, is confusing the developers and the customers.
If customers need more storage then I guess they will just buy extra USB flash sticks or external harddrives. All the console manufacturers have to do is supply one or two USB ports.
The way I see it, Nintendo doesnt need to team up with Microsoft: Microsoft need to team up with Sony. Nintendo have always done a grand job of engineering good consoles(Virtual Boy, maybe not) and the Wii offers a radically different gaming experience, but the 360 and PS3(Blu-Ray & price aside) are competing with pretty much the same product. DMC4, GTA4 - hell, any game thats released on both machines are exactly the same.

Sony and MS? Never gonna happen. I think Sony and Nintendo would join forces before they join with MS.
Anyway the reason there is such a huge deal about hd space is that this generation is all about downloadable content. Sony doesn't really impose a limit on the games that could be downloaded (they can be huge) while MS does impose a limit but have had to concede that limit at some points due to some of the game being pretty huge. Most games also include downloadable content now to add value (nickel and dime) to their games. Both Sony and MS have the ability to download movies. MS has Netflix and downloading movie scan easily eat up your harddrive especially if they are in HD resolution.
This generation is about media not so much about games, which is why Sony got plastered at the beginning of this generation. A lot of things that MS had done "right" Sony had to learn the hard way (by loosing customers). However in the end Sony was still more ofrward thinking, becasue frankly MS is doomed to repeat the same mistake they had last generation. Sure the cost on their console has gone down, but it will be at a lost. They have yet to be able to bring up their console yeilds and unlike Sony their harddrive isn't easily replaceable (sony uses a standard sata laptop harddrive) . So while Sony is finally gettting on its feet, MS is probably already working on their next console and it will most likely drop soon. This is something I didn't like when Sega did it and I'm not liking it now.
Nintendo has caught some flack for not including at least support for an external device, many users are have already maxed out the little amount of space they have. When you have games taking up 100MB and up, this is no surprise. Nintedo has always been kind of slow to catch on to these things. They are a very innovative company and I love the developer culture but they avid taking too many chances (excluding cool input devices, which they always seem to do).

Re: Apocalypse.
Fair play, I suppose. I have to say it would be nice if the Wii could use an external harddrive. :hmm:

Hopefully Nintendo doesnt trade more than 50% share....or MS could get hostile if they choose to.....they have the funds.....and have been known to threaten that route (see Yahoo)
Like GENTLE FURY mentioned, as long as Nintendo is a publicly-traded company, it doesn't matter if they "wanted" to get bought out or not... if a company buys enough of your shares you will get bought.
Anyways, in the world of business, making "plans" to buy up a competitior is nothing new really. Actually following-through though is a different matter altogether. I would be willing to bet that even Sony has at least taken a look at buying Nintendo too at some point. Business as usual, really.

other than bluray what really makes the systems different. i am sure the games that come out for both systems dont look that different. the biggest thing i guess that separates them is exclusive titles. i still dont have a system, and i am not sure if i will be getting one as yet. my pc plays games, and what i got spec wise is better than what they have to offer.
a friend told me that he heard rumors about msofts xbox 720, which is supposed to be the xbox 2.

Sorry i coudlnt help but notice this last point after the evening i had last night. While playing PES2008 with some friends last night on ps3, the difference was terrible. The amount of lag when running on 1080p is unforgivable. Not for me as such, i tend to not care so much about these things seems as iv worked in QA for so many years, but my friend, the owner of the tv and console kept on asking me if there was something wrong with his tv or playstation. He couldnt really understand what i was telling him and thought that if he maybe changed some settings then it would be fine. The problem even occured on 576p.
Strange thing is, the game as far as i could tell wasnt even running in 1080p. It seems it is forced to only run max at 720p. The lag is not an issue at all on 360. Seems some devs still getting used to the old cell/rsx combo.

Well, multiplatform games have to cater to the lowest console they'll be on and keep limitations in mind for that, which is why differences are minimal between them usually. I've seen games ported to the PS3 from the 360 that suck because the developer chosen to do the conversion didn't understand the PS3 hardware well enough to pull off a good port. So the realm of multiplatform games is always hit or miss depending on the side that takes more effort to code for. That's why it's smarter on multiplatform games to start your coding on the system you know will have more challenges and then convert the code to the system you know best. This way, you get a good product on both systems and don't end up losing user base. I can't tell you how many times I've heard EA sucks because they can't do decent ports. I personally love EA - maybe not the way they gobble up companies - but I love the games they make and can forgive the occassional bad port. It happens but these gamers really get upset in the forums over that sort of stuff and the bigger a company gets, the more likely it is to happen.
Exclusive games - a dying breed I think - can take advantage of a system's abilities. So when thinking like you are in your first two sentences, compare exlclusives not multiplatform titles. Just putting that out there.

).
heh hardly. Sony will never "join" forces with any other company. Way too much pride.
As for harddrive space, I applaud Microsoft for offering more harddrive space. Why? Because they're thinking out of the box. Gaming systems should be more than just that, especially for their price. They can and should act as a media center, remote streaming while away from the house, an internet portal for your TV, a device to rent/download/store movies and music and a lot more. The next 360 update includes Live support for free Netflix downloads. Poor Apple and their Itunez bloatware. Sony and Microsoft have it right. Nintendo... I could care less if they get bought by Yahoo, Apple or Shotunkuyoasan Fajimoto Industries. They made a cutesy box with no balls but a semi-great controller. That's it.

Well the original Playstation was supposed to be a SNES add-on, and Sony did provide the sounchip for the SNES (which is why the sound was so good for the SNES at the time) so they do have a relationship of sorts. Now I don't know if there are still sour grapes over what Nintendo did to Sony (forcing Sony to release their own console), but I'm sure they would get over it rather quickly the same way Nintendo got over Square moving to Sony's console with FF7. Its a business and I think two Japanese companies would rather join forces than let a western company take over.
Besides Nintendo is over a hundred years old, they aren't going anywhere. on top of that their reported value is about 83 billion, MS isn't touching them, they don't have the capital and they would go into serious debt if they tried, something they can't afford to do since the company is rich, but has shown little growth. Just because MS has a lot of money doesn't mean they can buy anything they want. Case in point, Yahoo. If Yahoo was too expensive for MS, Nintendo is way over their budget.

History would suggest otherwise, since Sony originally wanted to work with Nintendo before they released the PS1 but Nintendo backed out at the last minute, if I recall, claiming they wanted to stick with cartridges and had no need for CD's. We all know how that worked out for them. So that's one instance of Sony trying to work with Nintendo to develop a console.
Not to mention the whole blu-ray group thing which is Sony working with other companies but ya know...whatever.
