Jango 06-05-2003, 05:58 PM Hi!
I started modelling a human head. (surprise. how creative idea. lol)
Well, please look at the wireframes and gimme some hints what to do, or how avoid some bad topologie parts, before i start texturing.

Ok, I know there seems to be a "human head overflow" here. But please, if somebody can give me some help, do. :-)
Here come 2 new shots, with an improved topology (still some 5 sided and triangles left..) and a simple render without any texture yet.

Hey Jango,
Its coming along very nicely. I would get a little more definition in the area above the eyes. Dont add more faces, just define the area more. I would also say the same for the eye area. Its all too flat. Look in the mirror at your face and you'll see how the eye area sinks in a bit and the cheek bone beneath it protrudes slightly more than you've got it.
Also your neck is a bit thick for your head and the shoulders dont have a nice shape at all (sorry if they're not really a significant part of your model  ) Ears could also use a lot of work. They should come out a little more and give them a little more shape. They're too round and undefined.
I know its a lot of stuff, but its worth it. Fix them, look back on your old model when you done and you'll see why its worth it.
Look forward to a new update!
Good Luck!!

Hey,
I must agree with rISO on the whole "character" thing, but I think this should have been established before you even started modelling. Your face does have a very generic look to it and it doesnt hold much personality. Its alot easier to establish these things before you actually start modelling that to do it now when you have a dense topology.
I would honestly recommend working on defining the face and just getting it anatomically correct. Get all the proportions right as well and once you have done all of this. I'd start a new face and try and give it more 'character'. At least then you'd have a bit of experience with the technical side of it and you can concentrate more on the artistic side.
Keep working at it though, you'll definitely get it soon!!

Well, I started modeling the head with 2 pictures of myself as reference, so I was guided mainly by them. Though the head dont look much like me :-) I took the basic shape of the foto, so I think/hope the detail/personality comes very much with texturing it!? (Dammit do I have such an unpersonal face lol)
New pictures to come, tweaked eye(brow) region, ear and neck, as you suggested. :-)

Maybe you should post some pics of your reference photo, so we can see exactly what you're aiming to replicate.
I personally feel that the 'character thing' is'nt really your biggest problem at this point. Anytime you build a realistic human head, it tends to lack character.
I feel that your lack of definition and incorrect proportions is the problem. Try and focus on that more. Post your reference pics and we'll be able to see where exactly the problems really lie.

Hi!
You are right, my main problem is the anatomie and the propotions of a human head in general. Thats why I think it helps me much when somebody tells me at which positions of the face are "mistakes" or things that are too few or too much pronounced. But just see the head as "general head" (and following of that is, that he lacks character), I dont want a copy of my ref (thats why I dont post it).
Next I post my actual model :-)
(as I post it, I see how "thin" his body is, I will correct that, it distracts a bit from the head :-))
have a nice weekend..

ATM, I am doing better eyebrows, some eyelashes and starting to do hair with painteffects and control curves. I think its coming along.
I will post new shot, when hair is finished.
I also started to layout my UVs for the low poly mesh, so that I can start a first texturing.

Hey there. Great job on your model so far! I would really like to see a front view of your face, so that I can better check the proportions. Right now it is kind of hard to tell if everything is correct. If I had to guess though I think your eyes may be a tad too far apart. There should be roughly one eye width of space between them. Also the shape of your eye is not quite right. I drew you a really quick picture that hopefully will help you some.

Hi!
Thanks for the advice and the picture.
I corrected the eye shape and also moved them a big together.
I also corrected the nose and made it a bit less broadly.
Here is a pic with a hair test:

Ok, after I took some small break
Here comes the first textured version (I dare to post. *gg*)
I am a bit stuck or uninspired, though I read those nice Human Face Texture Threads in this forum.
So please gimme some hints and push my nose in the right direction. What suxx? what details are very needed? where to change color.. and so on..

Yeah I agree:thumbsup:
He's looking good, but your lighting is'nt really helping. Try lighting him with at least a 3 point lighting setup, so you can define his face a little better. It will make a huge difference. You'll see!!
