WIP THREAD
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...?f=208&t=663654 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=663654)

DESCRIPTION
This is the third of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It's Pumpkinhead, created for the movie with the same name, directed by Stan. In his hand, a motorcycle chain. Watch the movie to know more about it.

Details:
100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing and posing using Transpose Master. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 12 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less, at 3 million polys, imported directly to Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. Everything is pure geometry. Rendered in Mental Ray with 4 area lights. FastskinSSS shader used. Only color map and cavity map used (cavity plugged into the ambient slot). Render time: about 25 minutes each, on a Dual Quadcore + 8GB RAM, running Maya 2008 and Zbrush 3.1

I had a blast. Congrats to everybody who managed to finish and thank you all who stopped by my thread to say hello.

Cheers,
-Kris

DESCRIPTION
Category: Single Creature

Tribute to Stan Winston: April 7, 1946 – June 15, 2008
May his work continue to inspire us all, rest in peace.

This project was in conjunction with my Hard Suface Modeling class. Our goal was to have an entry in this contest. I chose to do the Terminator because he is one of my favorite characters, plus I can never watch the movies enough =]

The process: This entry was a very big experience for me (talk about upping your skillset from one model). I originally thought I was going to take this to zbrush for some nice details, but in the end I decided not to. I just used Maya for the modeling and mentalray for rendering, Photoshop to composite the renders.

Software used: Maya, HDRShop, mentalray, and photoshop.
Total Time: 31 hrs.

From beginning to end I have enjoyed the experience and all the great people here at cgsociety, everyone is great! The talent is very high here, I'd like to thank everyone again for all the c&c to help my model the best it could be.

Cheers! -Tim

DESCRIPTION
TITLE: T-rex Attack Scene
CATEGORY: Diorama

Ok, My work is finished. I've worked a lot on these days to complete my scene, because on september i'll have many university tests, and i won't be able to work on this project.

Some words about my work:
It represents, as many of you know, the first encounter of the T-rex at Jurassic Park. We are near the T-rex zone and the electrical power is off. The t-rex fence has no electricity and this prehistoric creature can freely attack the cars who are carring the visitors(Alan Grant,Lex and Tim,Gennaro,Malcolm).

I mainly tried to recreate the atmosphere and the look of the original scene.
I've taken about 3 weeks to complete the image. I've used Maya for most of the work,
Zbrush to sculpt and detail, and photoshop to make the specular, color and diffuse maps.
Here's a link to the wip:

Software used:
Zbrush,Photoshop,3dsmax

Comments:
this is my first HMC, first part of two: The Endoskeleton. i chose it because i want to learn to do semi-hard-surface in zbrush. The bust itself was modeled from Sideshow Toys' version of Endoskeleton

link here:
http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=83331

except for some basic cylinders which was done in 3ds Max, pretty much everything else is in zbrush which i intended to,

the biggest hurdle with this model is probably the poly count, which the total of the parts combined is around 22 million polygon. i had numeruos crashes when i do changes of subtools, dropping the model to the canvas for ortho renders itself had its share of crash

The second part of two: Terminator T800 battle damage. i wanted to learn how to do likeness and since i liked arnold it's a great choice. i again chose Sideshow Toys' version.

link:
http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=8318

The major obstacle with this model was achieving arnold likeness. the most laborous process was painting the wounds and bullet wounds, it gets quite boring after second day of doing the same thing over and over.

But all in all, it has been a great learning process. Thank you for everyone who has commented and helped me out during the making

Thank you.

Best regards,
Andrew

ps. sorry i had to split my post into two because i tried to put all the images onto one post but it didnt allow me to do so.

Hi everyone !!
In the year 1993, when the movie "Jurassic Park I" released, I was a kid and saw the movie on big screen. Those dangerous creatures with cruel behaviour, I had never seen those kind of scenes before in that time. So just became crazy from that time till today about Dinosaurs, specially the raptors !!

Remembering those amazing creations - I want to personally dedicate my entry to the great man who gave life to the creatures whom nobody ever seen, the man who amazed everyone by his work in the films those cannot be forgotten -

Stan Winston

This time I enjoyed a lot working on dinos, specially skin texture was very interesting and new to me so I learned very much from it. Now I realized that your first and second level of blocking should be very accurate and perfectly finished before you go to the next level. So nice experience again. :wip:

Best Wishes to all the participants !!

It's crazy how Stan Winston created so many of the memorable movie creatures and characters I grew up watching! I wish I had the time and skills to have made some of my other favorites, and I'm proud to pay tribute to him with this Pumpkinhead model.

I really enjoyed working on this model, and this being my first HCM challenge, it was also a great learning experience. I highly recommend these challenges to anyone who wants to up their skills, seeing such a great standard upheld by everyone is a real motivator. I'll definitely be participating in the next one too.

RIP Stan Winston. I can't wait to see his work on the T-600's in Terminator 4.

And cheers to all other participants, seeing your work was a real motivator and inspiration to me!

This was my first HMC and though I had first planned on making a Power Loader vs Alien Queen diaroma from Aliens, I decided that Alien Queen was too complicated to make in given time with Power Loader and Ripley. So I gave my attention on Power Loader.

I already used to love the design of this machine but as I inspected it for modeling, I realized how genious the whole mechanics of it was and how really workable it is.

This was a challenge that was so nice to watch, thanks to Stan Winston and all the other contributors.

I've observed HMC's for a while now, and after catching this one a few weeks into it and seeing the work being done I felt compelled to join. The talent demonstrated on this challenge and the support of artists of all levels really made this a special one (IMHO). Also, I think Stan would have gotten a kick out of all artists and work from this challenge that was inspired by his legacy.

As for my piece, I see a lot that I want/need to fix (eyes, hair, etc) But i'm relatively happy with what I'm showing considering the amount of time I was able to give it. I learned a ton working on this and from observing the other artists. This HMC got me to finally get off my butt and participate, and for that I'm grateful.

DESCRIPTION
This is the first of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It's the Tyrannosaurus from Jurassic Park, a great display of amazing animatronics and VFX done by Winston and ILM. One of my main inspirations to start studying CG.

Rendered in Mental Ray with 3 area lights.

Cheers,

This is the second of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It's a caricature of Stan Winston, originally painted on canvas by the master Sebastian Krüeger. In a sense, this is a double tribute: to the Master Winston and to Krüeger.

100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 7 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less in Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. DESCRIPTION
Description: This was my first HMC and I had lots of fun and challenges with the entry. I decided to go with the Mayor Ghoul because when I saw who was involved in the creation of the short film ( Stan Winston, Michael Jackson, and Stephen King) it just stuck out to me and after watching it seemed like a fun character. Stan Winston was the director of the film and always he is masterful with what he does. Got a lot of good practice with the peice. Hope y'all enjoy!

Production: The base mesh was modeled in Maya, basic joints put in place for posing the torso, arms, and fingers, and then exported to ZBrush for sculpting. Renders were from ZBrush. Roughly 60hr over the past few weeks.

Additional Info: My first HMC is done whoo hoo! I spent between 30 and 40 hours on this, it could have potentially been a lot less if I hadn't spent so much time on minor tweaking and learning from my mistakes, but that's part of the process. I don't really know how to go about doing a beauty render so just submitting orthos for now. I'm also running late for work will have wire frames up when I get home, just wanted to submit these images before the deadline, I learned a lot and thanks to everyone who helped me out with critiques!

I can say this is one of the toughest hcm i've ever tried out. I've constantly been under quite alot of stress seeing how well the other artist in this challenge are doing. During this challenge, i've picked up more tricks on how to fake details. Sad to say due to the lack of time, the end result has not match up to what i envision.
I'll continue to work on the model + texturing once i can manage to find time off from my work.

This was my second time participation in HMC. I really enjoyed the time and got to learn a lot from all the great artwork being done here. Everyone was great and i think its really helpful to participate in this competition as it give very wide variety of experience. I used maya for the base mesh and ZBrush for sculpting and photoshop for combining the renders.
I would like to thank everyone who appreciated n will surely join the next HMC too.
All the best to everyone.

Description:
Tribute to Stan Winston. Until I delved into this project I never really realized just how many iconic films and characters Stan was involved with. You could list Predator, Aliens and Terminator and have said enough but the list goes on and on and on. Thanks for all of your great, inspirational work Stan, rest in peace.

Well, in case you hadn't heard my tragic tale. My original goal was the complete shot of the predator unmasked. Hurricane Gustav slammed into Baton Rouge (my home) creating havoc in every way. My whole yard looks like it's covered in downed trees. 10 days without power and having to scrounge for basic means changed my plans for this project quite a bit. At first I thought, "Ah well, good try Wyatt, better luck next time." Then I stopped and realized, "Hold up, I've got a nice bit of work done, let me tidy it up and get it out the door. Don't let all of that time go to waste." So that's what I did and my full character turned into a bust. So screw you Gustav! :D

This is probably the best thing in CG I've ever created. I studied quite a bit before the sports icon challenge and in that one I put everything into practice that I'd learned. This challenge was the advancement of all of that practice and even more study. I still need to dig deeper into polypainting and quite a few other topics but I'm loving the results so far.
Lagniappe:
Figured I might as well throw in the gauntlets since I did finish them.

Fantastic competition everyone. Coming to this forum everyday was the inspiration and motivation I needed to keep on truckin' and as usual I learned a heap from everyone.

Congratulations all!

T-Saint is one of the feared Rippers from the comic/movie Tank Girl. In the movie, he is elegantly given life on screen by the revered Ice-T. What could be better than Ice-T alone? Ice-T in a costume designed by Stan Winston of course!

T-Saint: A Cop.
Tank Girl: Figures"

Roberto,

Great job man. Congrats for the hard work putting everything together.

Dunno if it's possible to have my Stan model as part of the Bust category instead of collection. Also, I think all the models should be listed at the models session and then as for collection, just the name of the artist should be listed. Because we did all those models as separate pieces that, at the end, form a collection of models. Dunno if others agree and if it's against the rules though but I think it's pretty fair.

As in, can we vote 'Best Diorama' to a model that's not in the Diorama section?

IMHO best HMC thus far. The quality and quantity of models is just mind blowing. Congratulations to all participants!! And Roberto you did a great job organizing it, I believe hmc challenges started being a little controversial due to the different nature of all the entries...thank you so much.

Best WIP thread - Faraz Mobin - T2

Best Bust - Krishnamurti M. Costa - Stan

Best Diorama - Alex Oliver - Stan Winston, T2, Alien Quee,TRex, Pumpking Head

Best Model - Krishnamurti M. Costa - Pumpkinhead

Antropus and Oliveria's entries are model collections but the individual models are good enough to stand on their own. If they are good enough to win the individual and the collection than so be it.Good luck everyone. (Oh and my entry is fine Roberto, thanks for organizing everything.)

Is my entry suitable for the model collection as well as the diorama?
Well it takes at least 2 or more models to be in a diorama.

My defination of model collection would be 2 or more models (excluding props if any) as the final submission. ( may be in a few thread as some prefer or in a single thread )

i've been always confused over the thin line between a diorama and a series of model collection. It doesn't really mean having a series of models will make a diorama
infact if i was going to be hypercritical...

The current, popular understanding of the term “Diorama” denotes a partially three-dimensional, full-size replica or scale model (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_model) of a landscape typically showing historical events, nature scenes or cityscapes, for purposes of education or entertainment

I think it going to start getting a little confusing after whatever i said earlier...
but i think the
There are some models that are in the Model Collection that are WAY better than some of the Bust/Single entries.
Can those in the the models collection be included the single/bust entries as well?
eg. kris and oliver

Just another suggestion -
Can i suggest those who are going to do more than a single entry to do everything in 1 single thread instead of opening another new thread for the other entry? I think it will keep the whole challenge MUCH more neater and it makes the updating of progress easier for the indiviual as well...

just my 2 cents.

Antropus and Oliveria's entries are model collections but the individual models are good enough to stand on their own. If they are good enough to win the individual and the collection than so be it.Good luck everyone. (Oh and my entry is fine Roberto, thanks for organizing everything.)

I agree :D, good luck everyone !

I DON'T UNDERSTAND I'M CONFUZED

Why nobody voted for the model collections? Maybe because it was not clearly asked in the categories to vote on the first page? But the category is there and it should be voted.

And why Max Chan is not included into the model collection category? Since he modelled 2 characters posed in a diorama he should stay in both model collection and dioramas, like we had in other challenges.

And no offense to Alex Olivier's fantastic work (congratz!) but it's not "diorama" it is model collection. Wrong category. It's taking away votes that should go to other people.

The following is what I would like to vote. But there are many things wrong here and I wonder why nobody else noticed that.

best individual entry: Faraz Mobin
Bust: Kris Costa
Dioramas: Max Chan
Model Collections: Kris Costa

WIP THREAD
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...?f=208&t=663654 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=663654)

Cheers,
-Kris
