Title: Saving the Alien Girl
Name: Daniel Lieske
Country: Germany
Software: Photoshop, ZBrush

This was my entry to the Uplift Universe CG Challenge.

it's quite an unusual piece for me because it's completely sculpted and rendered in ZBrush. I used Photoshop only for compositing and for the clouds. Since it was a CG Challenge entry, the making of this image is documented in detail in my challenge thread over here:

I'm happy to be the first one to comment this!
It's amazing, and it has the delicious flavour of the old sci-fi book covers.
Very cool!

Great use of color! Always refreshing to see a nice pallet when everything now a days seems to lean towards earth tones and dry looking environments. It's very Juicy! if that makes sense. haha. Very clean as well. Congrats!

Hey, thanks for all your nice feedback!

The colors of this image are often commented. The interesting thing about creating this image in 3D for me was, that I could put all the detail into it first and chosing the colors would be a totally seperate task in the end. I often experience, that my paintings start very colorful but get more and more desaturated in the process. Perhaps that's because flat color patches in the initial sketch become shaded surfaces and the darks and lights in the shading desaturates the image. However, in this image I was able to tweak everything to a point were both the detail is showing and the color stays vivid. I learned a lot from it and it was a great experience all in all.

Yeah, you have a very nice contrast between the detail and colors and everything shows through perfectly without sacrificing on either end.

What an absolutely incredible piece of work - as someone said, it perfectly captures those pulpy, lurid sci-fi covers from the 70's and 80's - it reminds me of Tim White, which is as high a compliment as I can pay you! Phil

Congratulations! A very nice picture. I like this "cheesy" old fantasy/sci-fi-look. Great characters. Beautiful colors. Nice story. Exellent!

My only small critic may be the creature's right leg. I don't understand, what's happening in that area. Or is it just me? But, nevertheless, a beautiful artwork!

(ok. After seeing your WIPs, it's now clear to me :) )

Fabulous! Love how it reminds me of a '70's sci-fi comic / movie! The colors and whole finish had me thinking it was a 2D piece at first, very nice! Congrats on making it to the front page, well deserved!

I love the style, the blend of Japanese style painting with sci-fi works really well. The colors are amazing, im addicted to how colors blend and this satisfies me!

The only crit I have is with clouds, as the cloud layer for the viewers planet seems to go around the other two orbiting planets, it makes my perception of their size become small. The atmosphere would only be on the viewer planet so the clouds should not be behind the other two planets. Sorry for the geeky crit  but I do love the image and style :) 5 Stars

Hey, I guess it's time for a big fat THANK YOU! for your nice comments! You really filled this thread with a massive dose of positive energy and for that I'm really greatful!

I also want to reply to some of your comments:

My only small critic may be the creature's right leg. I don't understand, what's happening in that area. Or is it just me? But, nevertheless, a beautiful artwork!

Thanks for the crit! The viewer should be able to understand everything without having to look at the WIP, so I guess I have to have an eye on things like that. 3D often gives you the feeling that everything explains itself because it's there in the model. But you have to pay attention to the same things as in painting, I guess.

The colors, the character... this would be a fantastic starting point for a CG classic-style science fiction. Very impressed, keep it up :).

Thanks! In fact, I developed a rough storyline in the last few month and the character is taking shape in my head. I will definitely work on more Captain Orion Artworks in the future.

it's very great.but color contrast is too strong.

Yeah, these colors are pushed to the limit. I noticed, that it heavily depends on the screen how the colors read in the end. But I like how it prints out. The colors are a bit muted in the print.

Damb, I love this. Any chance you were inspired by Frank Frazettta???

Frazetta is the man! :) I will always have his influence in my artwork because I really love his art.

The only crit I have is with clouds, as the cloud layer for the viewers planet seems to go around the other two orbiting planets, it makes my perception of their size become small. The atmosphere would only be on the viewer planet so the clouds should not be behind the other two planets.

That critic I haven't heard the first time. It's quite obvious that something is not right in terms of a classic space scenario. The thing is, that the adventures of Captain Orion take place in an alien atmosphere cloud were countless planets float in a coherent 'bubble' of breathable atmosphere. You can travel between those planets without spacecrafts and of course you have clouds between the planetoids in this scenario. But I see, that this is not really conveyed in this single image. I'll have to elaborate on that scenario in future artwork. :)

Thanks again to all you folks and stay tuned to new glimpses into the world of Captain Orion!

And I also want to add, that due to the positive response to this artwork, I made it available as a digital print on my website (http://www.digitaldecoy.de/portfolio_digitaldecoy/dd_docs/prints.php?lang=eng).
