Hi guys,

We're just posted a case study on Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Softimage website. SOFTIMAGE|XSI was the main tool used for this game. We interviewed the Kojima Productions team after they had finished development and as the release date for MGS4 was approaching. In this interview, we were lucky to be able to speak with staff from all the major development units, including characters, background, machines, 2D, event demos, motions and programming.

Quoted for agreement.

Actually, for many games (including MGS4) I would happily pay at least the price of the game for a hardbound book full of this kind of info :D

Hmm...

I would really recommend the limited edition of MGS4 for that reason. It comes with a blu ray disc with 6+ hours of making of documentaries filmed in HD. Really nice insight on how they made the game and all the problems they faced.

Thanks for the article Leo.

wow, 6 more hours of video from MGS4. as if the in-game video wasn't enough.

would be interesting to see some of the making of though, I do like it when games include those kinds of extras. especially the graphics, for a fairly complex game, they achieved a really "clean" look.

Wow this article was amazing, I love how it covered all aspects, characters, environments, lighting etc. I thought I was done reading and it just kept going!

Although the extreme length of the cutscenes in these games pisses me off I do admire the camera work of the realtime cutscenes. Absolutely outstanding quality and this article was most welcome.

sadly xsi didnt have the various plugins to stop mgs4 from having one of the worst stories in recent gaming history.
dont get me wrong im a major mgs fan, but mgs4 ruined it.

Re: MXDirector.

Although I didnt mind the story too much I did get fed up with the "Beauties" constant attempts to rape Snake and act so blatently like porn-stars. Its fluff like that Kojima needs to rip out.

Congratulations for the people involved in it .

yes, that was quite werid. it was also quite sick. i might be unusal but the knowledge that a girl was raped and forced to murder as a young child is a turn off for me. when im in the mood for love i ask a lady friend to wear the princess leia outfit not tell me storys of her messed up child hood.

also, mgs4 had great direction but terrible story. take the last scene for example, a horrible idea (sure it was great for fan service) but it wasnt a great ending (much like revenge of the sith, sure it was nice to see darth vader at the end, but it really wasnt a good ending) it made no sense, it made solid snake look like a pussy, and it didnt give him a appropirate ending, it was big boss's ending..........etc.... i could rant for days about how awful the ending was, and the story in general.
my point is, that the story was rubbish, but the direction was bloody fantastic. hence why people enjoyed it.

Excellent feature!

I dont have a PS3, and i havent used XSI for over 6 years, but i love seeing in-depth features on games, and seeing stuff like their workflow and wires.
If only there were features this in-depth for some of my favourite games like Team fortress 2, Soulcalibur 4 and GTA4!

I saw the japanese version of this (http://www.softimage.jp/user_case/mgs4/index.html) a while back. Good to see the feature has now been translated officially by the Montreal team. It's great when the tech is explained so generously by the developers.

As an aside, let's not get into the whole "story/gameplay" side of things here. It's been covered to death. This is an article about the art and the tech, not about the length of play, the writing, or the portrayal of characters from a narrative or cultural perspective.

so that explains why they showed that motorcycle model so much....

i feel really ripped off. Bought the limited european version for 75, and it has no extra bluray, only a crappy dvd with 30 minutes or so, which only has the trailers and some narrated segments with no interested whatsoever, no making of, no nothing. totally sux.

Awesome article!!! I play lots of games, and in my not at all humble opinion, (and leaving the game design out of the discussion) MGS4 was one of the most technically and artistically amazing games I have ever seen. It had a level of craft that makes most games look amateur. MGS4 even gives Crysis a run for it's money on the technical front (and IMO, blows it out of the water artistically). It simply must be experienced first hand to appreciate it.

It was great to be able to read about some of the more technical behind the scenes stuff, although it would have been nice if they had written a bit more on their environment art, because that's what I do, but I'm not complaining!

They were also very funny!

Yeah massive kudos to Konami for revealing how they approached the game from an Art Production perspective. it's always great to see how another developer (especially a good one) breaks down there art tasks and what they did to solve the (many) problems modern game development throw at you.

Cool

Thanks Leonard, I really do enjoy these "behind the scene" type interviews...the back stories.

I'm a heavy LightWave 3D user, I have been sense v6. And though I'm completely enjoying it with no present plans to start using something else, I am however really really like what XSI is showing. I'm getting more in to character animation, and I can honestly say, if I were to have choose another 3D application I'd seriously consider the new XSI. Thanks again for the article.
