Title: Castle Construction
Name: Dennis Sedov
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray

Here is a process of constructing a castle. Actual idea came to me at the middle of making this picture. I decided to handlaid all the stones and actually model EVERYTHING. So I modeled the shape first and then laid all the stones.

Great work, it was really worth to do it by by hand the randomness is great! Especially I like the lighting of the night shots, the day loomks a bit flat to me! But good job with all the nice details!

Thank you everyone for the comments!

Here is a little more explanation of why did I place those tiles individually my had.

I tried to create a script first that would do that for me and put randomization in it. I thought, that placing several thousand tiles would basically take me several days of just placing them =) After a little experimentation I found several things. First I can not procedurally place all the tiles, as some of them would still require placing by hand. Second, though it looked random - it did not have "idea" behind it. It did not look as if someone thought before placing. So I started putting them by hand, and thinking - "why would I place it here? and what size should a tile be to actually make sense". So I kind of put my self in a shoos of a construction worker =). It took me two days to do - but when I look back I think it was worth it.

I won't lie, saying that I placed EVERY one of them - I did some copy paste of large chunks of already layered tiles, but still it all looks like it is had placed.

What I really liked about the process and what made it a bit simpler is that I first modeled the castle without the tiles (it actually happened to be a "concrete" layer for the tiles) and then placed them on top of a geometry. It was much easier and helped make decisions faster. It was also a bit easier to place camera and just generally move around the scene, as the scene with tiles turned on would literaly take about 2-3 seconds a frame for update.
The render of 1500x1500 takes about two and a half hours to render with GI.

Hi, Work excellent. Beautifully and technologically. It is assured that the technology of imposing of a tile tested by you will be useful to many artists. The lesson on this theme can turn out very actual and useful. Creative successes.

Thanks a lot guys! I really appreciate kind words! Next time you'll see another experiment I am currently working on. Also everything hand made but with different theme and materials.

great picture, you must have quite a patience doing it all by hand, one tiny detail that bothers me is that all stones are piled exactly on top of each other in real buildings they always overlap to give more strength so if you want this to be a convincing picture you have to hand place the tiles all again and then remember to shift alternating rows half a stone to the lefy or right. ;)

I see what you're saying. I had a different idea in mind, and only now I realized something. Those stones were supposed to be tiles. So they are added no top of the building as a finish. But now, I look at my picture and see piles of stones right in the middle - it would be hard to proof that those are tiles now =)

I like the use of color in some of those renders, one thing that really throws me though is the lack of any bonding in the stonework..I reckon the whole thing would fall down like a deck of cards at the first sign of a quake,I was a stonemason before doing CG so it's possibly more apparent to me :)
