View Full Version : Release file association from Maya 4.0 to 5.0
HONG KONGer 06-05-2003, 03:23 PM I install 4.0 AFTER 5.0. The installation of 4.0 automatically associate Maya files to it. Therefor when I double-click a Maya file it opens with 4.0.
I want Maya files to be open with 5.0. So I would like to know how to release file association in Maya 4.0.
By the way, when installing 4.0, what files are associated with it?

i would think that .ma, .mb and .iff are associated with it and maya 4's fcheck. if using windows i would think you would be able to right click on any .ma or .mb file and select "Open With | Choose Program..." and then browse to your maya 5 .exe using the "Other..." tab and select the "Always use this program to open these files" option.
You can open the file in the Windows explorer by right-clicking on the .ma or .mb file and choose Open With.... then choose Maya 5 and check the option Always use this program to open these files. This will re-associate your .ma or .mb file with Maya 5.

Although the "Open With..." trick will work but I don't think it's a "proper" way to do so.
What I want to do is RELEASE from 4.0 so the file will automatically associated back to 5.0.
I know it might sound stupid.

There is no "release" since files are associated with either one program or another. Releasing the association from 4 would mean that Windows wouldn't know what to do with th file*.
If you would like to change it, you can do so in the "file types" section of the "folder options" control panel.
Or you could just install 5 again.
*Actually, most programs will set things to the way they were prior to their installation when you uninstall them, but that data is stored in the uninstall script.

too bad
thanks all
You don't have to reinstall all of Maya 5. Simply go to Settings/Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs and click on Maya 5. Then click on Change. Then Choose the Repair option for Maya 5.

i don't get it.... whats wrong with just using the open with option and choosing the always use this program button? seems simple enough to me and it gets the job done. if you double click on an ma or mb file it will open up in whatever version of maya you picked as the exe to open it with.
