Okay so I just finished Bobby Chiu's Digital Painting Class and I'm really excited to get started on some new works. See what I can do with this new knowledge...
Here's the Final from the class reworked from the class critique. I'll have this in the finished 2D area and my portfolio shortly.
And here's a new one I've started on. Thinking this is nearing the final lighting set up and such. Any critique would be great!
Funny pictures, Especially the second one.
The first one is not quite working for me, I love the back ground, but it feels something is missing for the main figure. He ( or she) looks sad or scared but there seems to be no reason for it. it makes the image a bit hollow, imho
Also it do not follow the nose thing on his head. the thing under his eye seems to be a nose, ( might be my mistake) but than there is also a pink thing on the normal nose. if it is just skin than I would put some wrinkles in it to show its not a second nose...
the second one is adorable. only thing that took some time is the eyes of the little mousses. I thirst though they were open but makes more sense if there not, so... my suggestion would be to make them darker like the actual fur/skin
Second I would like to point out the mouse hole is missing some dept, the wall seems to be as thick as paper.
But keep up the work

Lios, thanks for the feedback! On the first character, I think I'm at the point where I need to move on and do some new works so he's pretty much done. (already submitted on the Final 2D forum as well) I agree that it's a bit dull, I had planned to add a shell neacklace and a surf board to spice it up and add a point to him but was defeated with perspective on the surf board.... perhaps another day. The nose is meant to be a large human like nose with the nostrils on the face and the rest of the nose extrooding off the face. I think because I added fur(it's cold there) to the top it lost it's readability.
On the second work, I will add depth to the wall hole on the final run, I had an inside wall chunk on there at one point, think I may have accidentally removed the layer with that.
As for the eyes, I wanted to give the mice a "WOW, look at that cheese" look of awe so I will keep them opened and focused on the cheese. I should have an update on the Cheese Monster out shortly.
Again thanks for the crtique!
I love critque like I love candy... and I'm a man that really loves candy!

Nice work man! Love the concept of the snow creature a lot. The detail in him is great. In regards to the cheese image... maybe you could round out the mouse whole a little bit to get rid of those jaggy edges. Keep up the fanstastic work!

I like what you've got here. I think that the area between his back leg and and his body could us a bit more depth. Also the mouse in the middle seems very flat and unrefined. Possibly an issue with the shadow of the mouse in the foreground. Only a minute to chat but i like what I see.

Thanks for all the feedback all, I'm going to get back into the Cheese Monster soon.
A bit off the subject.. Just a quick one for the DSG... The Floater

Very nice pictures. Just add some details. Ideas are perfect.

Long Over due update... It is progress. I did a mouse! Need to add the final hair pass and a pupil on him, but progress nuntheless. Fluffy new carpet too!

Your creatures are really funny!!

So I'm going to try and finish thisd up tonight to submit to an Art Contest tomorrow
Any thoughts would be great!! I still need to add a final hair layer to the mice, and I'm still working on the middle one. Nopticing I may need to move the wall away from the characters a bit too. It doesn't look like the cheese would have room to fit where it is now.

Just got finished illustrating a kids book about a newly minted Penny and the adventures he goes on. My first kids book, pretty fun. Photoshop and Illustrator

So here's where I'm at now, I had a crunch between the kids book and the cheese monster that was due for an art contest. Here's my submitted work. Still looking to improve on it though... Here's where I'm at. Any thoughts?

Update on the cheese monster
04-06-2009, 08:20 AM
These are a couple works I made for my bathroom, it was a bit plain, This first is an original artwork, I made it while messing around in Illustrator and trying out a new style
The second is a remake of a picture I had found at the thrift store that had been hanging in my bathroom already. No name or I'd give credit.. just wanted to spice it up to the others style and play in my new CS3 Illustrator and Photoshop. And huge thanks to UrbanDirty.com for the bg textures
04-07-2009, 08:26 AM
Random Painting starting with a nice BG from UrbanDirty.
PS, may line it in illustrator.

Started as a piece for the DSG, decided to add some more time to it.
I got a new hard drive and ended up losing the past year of my work in the process, decided to start finishing some of my new works.
Still need to finish the lamp, stage, the curtains, and I'm not sure I'm liking the hair.
Any critique would be great!

Cool stuff. Ive always been a fan of cartoony stuff rendered realistically. Like with good lighting and all that jazz. Your website was cool too. The whole bathroom scene was unique. I noticed in the cheese monster image you could use some shadow underneath the characters. The cast shadows you have are good but they should start underneath the characters some more. The characters kinda look like they're floating right now. Keep up the good work.

Sorry, i hope you dont mind. But looking at the cheese monster some more, i noticed the composition could be improved. Maybe with a little more drama in it. I whipped up a quick sketch in photoshop. I put the hole behind the monster as if he is blocking them from it. and made angles of the shadows pointing towards the hole. You could probably take this to another level and make the camera even lower the monster even bigger and the hole even further away. Maybe put the camera on the same level as the rats. That way you could get a better sense of scale.

booleanspline - Thanks for the reply, I like new comp. I actually thru swapping out hard drives ended up losing the file for the cheese monster picture... very sad, but I may redo it with a better comp later on..
Glad you like the site.. A bit random but I think it's fun. I need to do a remodel and make it easier to upgrade... Another day...
Did you have any crit for the Freak Show?
04-21-2009, 03:16 AM
I really like the Cheese Monster painting, the color palette is really nice, and the concept is pretty funny. Things I can see that could use work are a) expressions: The mice don't seem too concerned that one of their own has just been eaten. b) body language: the mice again, are unconcerned as their facial and body expressions show.
I think this image has great potential, I'm familiar with Bobby's style and you achieve it pretty well, keep at it!
04-21-2009, 09:04 AM
Okay So I think This may be the final... I need Critique!!
04-21-2009, 05:59 PM
sprogis7 : Thanks for the feedback! The mice were supposed to be looking excited, they just stumbled upon this huge piece of cheese and are geeked, I was having some trouble with their expressions to portray that though, once I'm done with Freakshow I'll dive back into that one.
and yeah, when I saw Chiu was doing a online school I jumped on it. He is the closest artist to me style wise and I had a blast, fun classes.
Any thoughts or comments on Freakshow?
04-26-2009, 02:58 AM
Okay so I think I'm done with this one.... Does Anyone else have any comments on it? I'd love any feedback anyone might have.
Freak Show Final
Not sure what my next project will be but I'm planning on finishing it up like this one.
Again, any crit on this one would be great!

A quick speed painting to celebrate the Wings series win!
05-16-2009, 01:38 PM
I dont think it was quite like that the ducks put up a really great fight, esp after beating the sharks. Bruins loss was a heart breaker.
05-16-2009, 05:22 PM
Yeah, it wasn't the destruction the picture illustrates, I actually sketched it out after the 6-3 game, but that was a great series.... all of them have been this year, Go hockey!!
06-04-2009, 07:12 AM
Quick Speed Painting to loosen up, it's been too long
06-15-2009, 07:08 PM
Another one... Needs some refinement, thinking yellow and black for the butterfly.. Any crit?

Working on making a lighter easier www.TobyArt.com (http://www.TobyArt.com) so I can update easier, and add new art.
I'm liking the night one better right now..
12-28-2009, 09:08 PM
Okay, next week I'll be redoing the site and need some feedback on the designs above. Any thoughts? Is this more professional than the current www.TobyArt.com (http://www.TobyArt.com)? Does it lack style and personality?
]Comments? Crit? PLEASE!
