i would like to find a motion capture system that will let me capture 2 people ballroom dancing, and output *.bip files. also that uses 'standard webcams', Logitech 640x480 @ 30 frames per second type cameras.

i did a search for cheap motion capture on Google, but nothing stood out.

if i can use webcams then i limit my hardware cost. i have old computers that are in the 2003-2004 vintage, using DDR400 RAM. i've used older systems with DDR333 for capture at that resolution.

* computers
* cameras
* software
* backdrops (large pieces of colored fabric)
* space, that is, room to set all the stuff up.
* color dot markers to facilitate mocap.

what software would you use in a system like this, to videotape the people dancing, and to convert that set of data to a *.bip or similar file ?

i mention *.bip's because i am familiar with them from 3D Max.

Hey there!

The cheapest system you will be able to find right now is the Optitrack system by Naturalpoint, the 12 camera system (which will allow 2 person capture) will run you $8441 for the base package plus suit (about 279 each, so 279x2) marker set ($249x2) plus tripods (or you can get wall mounts if the system will be fixed. Total price with inexpensive tripods and mounts will run about 10k for everything

They are currently working on a plugin for 3ds max that will allow you to save as bip files (currently only as bvh though... but the plugin should be ready soon, possibly this month or October)

thanks for the replies. $8K isn't too bad.
