View Full Version : Animation: the Milko Cow
GrafOrlok 06-05-2003, 11:08 AM This is what kept us busy this spring here at Fido Film, Stockholm.
The character was initially a clay-type stop motion animation puppet that was made a few years back. This time the script called for a realistic rendered character that was to be integrated with live action footage. Even though the character is extremely toony stylized, the director did not want it to be toony animated.
Fun Job all in all!

How did you create the clean plate for the water splash? I imagine it as extremly difficult to paint out the foot from the splashing water?

Thanks guys. Glad you liked the "behind the scenes"-part. About creating the clean plate for the watersplash: It was suprisingly easy because we used a black draped foot when filming. I will ask Martin, who painted it out, how he pulled that through. Probably I am over simplyfying it...
I forgot to say: we used Maya for all modeling and animation and did all compositing in After Effects and in Avid DS/HD. Some shots where as many as 80 layers all in all I believe (I'll have to check that with Nordis... sounds pretty unbelievable...). As you can see in the behind-the-scenes material the cow itself was built up in several layers just to get that subtle furry look.

That was done digitally. It actually rubs off a little when the guy sprays the wall...:p
Fantastic little ad. I found it compelling from start to finish.... you guys did your jobs well for me.
Animation wise, the belly wobble was a nice touch, when the cow gets hit by the car. I like the running camera pans also. It all adds to an exciting piece.

I didn’t like the music that much, but that’s just my opinion.

Wow, plugged... What a response!
*The water splash: I don't really remember who did the paint job. Martin Malm and Pablo Diaz did all compositing and I remember talking to Martin about it and he said it went quite well doing that because of the black foot... Today someone here said Pablo did it though, and both are on vacation right now so I can't ask:D I guess they cloned from previous frames and tweaked the results. They used some sort of displacement to fake the refractions. And hey, please take notice of the remaining watersplash in the background of the following clip. It's all fake!
*The roll over the car: it's one of my favorites too. I used a lattice deformer to deform his body where it hits the car hood and there's a slight jiggle effect on the belly, but most of the soft bouncyness is just careful keyframing and weighting... The tail was driven by a softbody IK-spline throughout animation and here is a rare occation where it actually does what I wanted it to do. The car is all from the live footage except for shadows and reflections. It was painted out to get that little extra bounce and Johan Nordensson, who did all shading/texturing/lights, put these extra reflections that made the hood buckle a little, just for the final touch.
*Renderer: We used Maya's native renderer throughout the gig. We felt that we needed to use it to get the fur rendered without problems (yeah, right!). It took a week to render all the layers, and of course, we had to do it again a few times:rolleyes:
And on the behalf of the Fido staff: thanx for all the nice words.
god damn it ! ..i hate this ! :buttrock:  :applause: :airguitar

Very grand of you sir to make those 'behind the scenes' scenes... Excellent. It's always fascinating to see how you can never dodge solid planning and lots of honest hard work :D
Eftersom jag också är svensk så betyder det här förstås automatiskt att jag också skulle kunna göra actionsekvenser med kor som huvudpersoner. Next up: Mamma Mu ;)

Excellent piece of animation work certainly a job well, thank you very much for the behind the scenes clips too, its nice to see the effort you put in to achieving the realistic detail in making it feel as though the cow was really there in particular the sequence where the cow bounces over the car.
I can't fault this one very nice work all around :applause:
Nice stuff, saw it broadcasted yesterday. Immediately I thought that this must be Fido! And, yeah.. I was right:)
The only thing thats bothers me is the fur in some angles.

What?:surprised I've only heard people react to these pesky little brats:p

Thanx. But I must say one of my alltime favorites is Carl and Ray from Tippet studios for blockbuster video. But they're in a whole different league... Wish we could do that quality. This was as far as I know the first time a character was integrated like this in a commercial here in Sweden. But let me tell you, the budgets over here is so different from in the States, that our budget would only go as far as preproduction in the States. So with this tight budget and only about 5-8 guys working on it (the PP I mean) I think we got quite far...
But it was fun.

Looked into this animation a bit more, it's really great! Hope more commercials will have CG like this in the future!
Things that could be worked on though:
Better Lightning, the cow look sometimes plastic, but as I understand you had a deadline!:)
The compositing work is nice. Really enjoy to watch the behind the scenes movies. What is it, After-FX? Shake?
Keep up the good work!

Oh guys, FYI, none of my computers (all PC, one brand new outta-the-box XP machine) shows your webpage properly.
www.fido.se click in the "flash site" link... nothing happens. Page loads with a "Page loaded but with errors".
Does anyone else have this problem? (And yeah I have flash)

That's strange! Obviously mine at work shows everything OK, brand new, and so does my home PC which is very old. However I've noticed that when your Java and Flash settings aren't optimized you get an error message... Dunnu

Aha! Embarressed to say but it was a "PICNIC" (= Problem In Chair, Not In Computer" :) ):
Click on the little blue squares, which I did -> Nothing happens
Click on the actual *text* that reads "modem" or "broadband" -> WORKS
You should consider making the li'l blue squares to the right of the actual text klickable too. Sure threw ME off. :)

Tobbe! You're too kind. Great to hear from you. Hope all is well over at IdolFX. There's a technical issue that stops us from updating some of the pages at the site. We're working on it whenever we got time (yeah, right).
Glad it worked out for you Master Zap:rolleyes:. You know, the mouse arrow turns into a pointing finger whenever there's a link... I think there's a chapter in "Windows for Dummies" on that...:p Just kidding!

And this is EXACTLY the problem; The mouse IS a pointing finger there (because the whole image is a clickable link linking to self ("#") and your actual links are in the JavaScript). So I click. Nothi'n happens.
