View Full Version : duplicating groups
admkrk 09-12-2008, 10:33 PM this is all fairly new to me and i'm sure this is something simple that i keep overlooking, but i can't seem to figure it out. i'm working on a building and grouped the parts to a basic door. as i go down the hall, duplicating the door as i go, it doesn't take long before the original is full of all the dupped parts and each one in the progression fills with the ones that follow. this is making a huge mess in the scene veiw and no dought in the file as a whole. not to mention trying to go back and select something. i don't know how much sense that made, but in the picture, the stairway door is the original and the office door is the dup.
i'm kind of at a stand still at this point, so if someone could slap me up side the head with a "hey, dum a**, all you have to do is this..." i'd much appreciate it.

I'm not entirely sure what your problem/question is, but try this:
Create a primitives->null, put all the door components under it (drag and drop), then branch select it (middle click), and duplicate that. You can also create a clone if you want it to preserve a relationship with the original (Edit->Instantiate/Duplicate->Clone Single)

i was afraid i didn't make much sense. i'm trying to clean up/keep things organized. or somewhat anyway. i'll try parenting the door to a null and see how that goes. the more i think about it, that might be the answer.
i definitely don't want to clone as there is actually another door the first one originated from that i intend to delete once i'm done. i already have another one i made about 10 dups of that i have to go back and fix once i figure this one out.
thanks for the quick feedback.
