View Full Version : Adding Doors to my building
RP-350Z 06-05-2003, 04:10 AM I'm not sure how I should go about creating doors like the ones shown in the photo below.

Should I knife my building to do this, or should I completely build a door in a new window then bring it in? If that's the way, then how would I go about incorporating it into the building? Boolean the area where I'm going to put the door? As of now the walls to my building have no thickness. I'm playing around with that now, but if anyone wants to let me know what I should do to get thickness on my walls feel free to add that in.
Thanks a bunch.

it all depends on the level of detail that you need.
if its for a long long shot you could texture it and use transpannency or alpha to make the doors. for a closer shot I would try and add depth to it though. In my experience boolean works wonders at cutting out doors and windows and stuff like that.

Whenever I add doors / window features to a building I do a boolean subtraction to make the 'space' and then insert the modelled geometry (certainly much nicer now with better bool). I use this technique to insert room models into a skeleton structure and it seems to work well.
Hope this helps - Max

For the walls, i usualy start out with a box (or an extruded spline) so it already has some kind of thickness..
As for the windows/doors, i'm modelling them seperatly and i'm never using The boolean tool, cause the meshes get very "messy" this way. Don't know how the new boolean plug in r8 does this because i'm still working on 7.3..
So i'm knifing the windows out of the meshes and ad a window/door

When i have to create a room from scratch in C4D i create splines for each wall with the doors and windows holes. Then i extrude each wall and put them together.
The cool thing about this is that you keep eveything intact. You can change the wall thickness by changing the extrude amount and if you need to move a door or a window you can simply move the spline points to the new location.
