derwolpertinger 06-05-2003, 02:47 AM hi there,
got bored of the iceburgscene, but for those who are awaiting the longer animation of it, don't worry i'll do it, i swear ;).
but now to the new stuff: :D
some of you might remember that character, i started it really a while ago and now decided to do something with it, well finish it. started as an evil fantasy style barbarian in my mind back then, i was pretty bored of that usual cliché type stuff so that i discontinued working in that direction. at the moment i don't really know what to do with him, but somehow i like the current style. well, modelling is not entirely finished, the head is still not connected to the body, but this is covered pretty good isn't it?
:p the textures are totally procedural right now, but maybe i'll paint a map for the body and face.
as for the surrounding scene, i think some sort of stylized swimming pool would be cool, but i'd really like to hear your advices on what to create around him.
gotta sleep now, i'll write more tomorrow in case i forgot something.
as everytime c&c is greatly appreciated! :D

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWW!!!!!
But very nice, though! Face is really awsome! Now how about some clothes for him, uh?
put him in a furry pimp jacket or something so we don't have to see those cheeks dude.
nice model.

YIKES!
I think he needs some serious tanlines. :)
Great texturing and modeling....I think that is why the tanlines just seem so natural.

Fantastic!! How bout putting him swimming (with that torus floating him since he can't swim) in the iceberg scene of yours? That would be cool:scream:

06-05-2003, 08:43 AM
Oh no! I was eating my breakfast when I saw this - needless to say I didn't finish it ;)
That's a very nice render though, I love his boots. Any chance of a closer view of his face?
Cheers

Hehe nice idea. I like peoples idea to. Him swimmimg round this iceberg. He won't feel the cold water for sure.
P..:
Hi,
very, very nice work. I really love the skin look. How did you accomplish the translucency? TranslucentPro? ChanLum? I really like the rendering style very much.
cheers mnu

thx very much for all your comments!! :D:bounce:
ok, i think won't give him some clothes, people wouldn't be able to see his beauty anymore. :p
and i wouldn't have put that much effort in the total body when i am going to let him wear some piece of clothes. and, deefinetly no, i won't put himm in the iceburg scene because 1. i can't look at that scene anymore for the next weeks. and 2. the styles of this and the iceburg scene are just too different.
as for the demanded closeup render, that will follow soon.
and finally the skinshaders translucency is made mit translucent pro. but i really got to admit that i am still not very used to this shader, i often get strange artifacts and not the look i desired although i read the fu..... manual 3 times. well, seems i have to read it once more.
i'll model some sort of swimming pool now, and something else, but that's a lil' secret. ok it is a secret but don't expect tooo much of it, just wanna keep you looking in this thread.
cheers, björn

Very funny and well modeled.
Gotta be a pink Barbie kiddie pool, with a cooler full of Seagrams wine coolers and a few dead tunas... and don't explain the tuna.
Looks great.

hey the barbie kiddie pool is a pretty cool idea! :D
but i didn't really understand the rest you wrote. :( what does seagrams mean. is it a company?
as for the development of the character, i just connected the body to the head. now i am thinking if i should rig him first and then texture him or the other way around. i think i'll start with texturing. :)
but can someone gimme an advice on how to integrate teeth in the rig? how do you guys solve that prob. are the teeth part of the mesh or is it a single object. problem is that bones would deform the teeth and not just rotate the whole thingy isn't it? well, rigging is going to be the toughest job for me here cause i've never ever set up a rig with mocca, just did some simple rigs in r7. tips on how to rig him are always welcome.

Seagrams wine coolers are a type of alcohol drink. Like weak wine with some orange or berry soda-pop mixed in... ugh.
As far as the teeth go... you could apply a 100% Claude Bonet map to them if you are using a bone to open the mouth and turn the head. I ended up restricting them to just my head bone for rotating and then part of my posemixer object to open and close the mouth.
http://www.google.com/search?q=seagrams+wine+coolers&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
Google baby, its great.
yeah I kiddy pool would rock. Put some little kids crying as he flattens there pool, that would be kinda funny too.

thx for the explanations wesware and JIII! :D
@wesware: when you do it like this are the teeth part of the whole head mesh? i guess that they are not connected but part of it right?
i spend the last few hours on throwing the model out of the sym object and killing symmetry then after.
here's the desired closeup of the head:
http://www.derwolpertinger.de/cgpics/nu4.jpg
unfortunately i won't have the possibility to work on the model the next days, so an update can be expected next week.

With Claude Bonet and posemixer... the teeth can remain a totally seperate object. They just have to be present in all the different poses for posemixer.
Just my personal preference, but... I feel like his brow could be a little more cro-magnon like... just a little more full. IMO
Heh heh - skins can´t swim....very nice and funny.
The translucency effect in the close up is cool - (I´m still trying to get decent results with that shader too - I know the manual by heart now!!!).
Btw:
If you plan to use PoseMixer (which is very cool!): get OptimizedMorph at www.studio-fabian.de

great work derwolpertinger. nothing else to say. it's just disgusting how good your modeling is:) I guess the details depend on where you want this guy's personality to come down. He does seem like the kind of guy that would carry his food with him everywhere, though...
(Do you think everyone leaves the water when they seem him coming?)

wesware: thx again for the explanation, be prepared for more questions when it finally comes to rigging. :p
as for the cro-magnon look, i'll try that.
pit: thx, and i'll use posemixer for sure, just gotta get my manual and read this part a few times. :D and i'll try that optimized morph, if you say it is good. :)
brucie: thx a lot for your comment! this proves myself that it is worth spending a lot of time on something, even if it's sometimes frustrating .

First: OPtimizedMorph from Fabian...wonderful!! I used it for eye blinks on my dino. Would be perfect for facial animation.
I think it would be cool derwolpertinger, if you made him the "vacationer from hell". Maybe a series of short pieces of this unwelcomed visitor crashing beach parties, pool parties, etc. Might be fun...

First off, the guy is adorable. second, work on the eyes. Something about his head reminds me of a fish... well he is swimming! I dunno. As to the teeth, make them a seprate object. beyond that, I gots no advice. Great job over all, I wish I had the mad fat man skillz!
derwolpertinger
06-06-2003, 11:30 AM
hey bobzilla, cool idea! :D and you definetly convinced me to use fabians plugin now. :D i am curious how it will work.
jester: thx for your c&c, i think the pupils are just too big, gotta make them a bit smaller to get rid of the fish look. :D

derwolpertinger: Fabian's plug in works with PoseMixer, only instead of copying your entire mesh (which is usually your entire model, if you have a realistic, single mesh model!) you make a poly selection of only the area you need to change.
And...it's FREE!!!!
derwolpertinger
06-06-2003, 01:00 PM
damn that is one cool plugin, i already thought that it is kinda odd that you always have to copy the whole mesh. :hmm:

Great work!

06-11-2003, 02:14 AM
back again, worked really a lot on the whole character, rather boring work, that you almost can't see:hmm: , like creating selections, throwing everything out of symetry objects and then adjusting the geometry and killing the symetry, adjusting some shaders, i totally remodelled the swimsuit cause the old one's geometry was totally messed up. finally created these damn teeth, i started about five times but everytime i couldn't get the result i wanted.:annoyed: but got it now! :D
i am really looking forward to texturing now!:bounce: :bounce:
so here are the teeth(no aa and lowquality shadow maps)

and here's the
AAAAAHHH!!!!, JUST LOST MY SKIN pic::eek:

dude those are some pretty nice teeth dude.
almost enough to make a pic in themselves.

Very nice teeth. Would love to see a tutorial on how you did these. I tried to model a set a few nights ago, and came nowhere close to yours.
Mine where mainly just cubes sitting on a set of gums.

06-11-2003, 11:51 PM
Looking really good!
Yes, there is a fine line between really well done teeth and chicklets shoved in some lips!
You should have fun texturing. Do you have BodyPaint? That will help make it more fun 'cause you can paint right on the model. But, there's always the boring UV manipulation to deal with, but if you made selection sets as you modeled the parts, it should be fairly straightforward.
Again...nice work!
derwolpertinger
06-12-2003, 12:05 AM
thx for the compliments guys!
as for the tutorial, well at the moment i've really seen and modelled enough teeth. but i think i'll do a tutorial in the future if enough people want it, but i gotta there's really no special trick to build them.
bobzilla, yeah i own bp but i will mainly use ps for the texturing work cause i am more used to it. and now i gotta do the ugly uv manipulation:hmm: .
bobzilla
06-12-2003, 12:11 AM
Even with BP it's still a bit of a pain. It needs a relax function, or something. No matter how careful and exact I am, I still have to go in and move them all around.
Well, good luck!!
derwolpertinger
06-12-2003, 11:03 AM
yeah bp really has to be upgraded, when i have a look at deep paint i really want some features of it to be transferred to bp. well as you said the relax function would be a huge help.

thx biginner and siddhy!!! always cool to get nice comments after the hard work! :buttrock: :bounce:
now i just can't await coming home tomorrow to finally start texturing that guy. :)
bobzilla
06-13-2003, 12:52 AM
derwolpertinger: Once you start animating how do plan on preventing the fat from intersecting itself? I have this dino leg that's pretty muscular but I'm having trouble precenting the calf from intersecting with the thigh.
If you have any ideas, please let me know!!
Happy texturing...

06-20-2003, 02:10 AM
unbelievable, but i finally finished uv editing! :bounce: :bounce: damn, that was pretty hard..
so i can start texturing now! :D
the pic shows just the very first penstrokes on the colour map, so it is not really commentable (does this word exist :surprised ).
well, just wanted to show you that i am still alive, working on him and have yet not given up. ;)

it sure is commentable:
it looks GREAT!
but the red lines coming off of the nose gatta be toned down some
keep it up
derwolpertinger
06-20-2003, 08:32 AM
and 'nother lil update.
http://www.derwolpertinger.de/cgpics/nu13.jpg
the bump map is just a procedural placeholder for the upcoming painted map. but i gotta take a texturing break now cause my handwrist still hurts because of that damn uv editing..:annoyed:
bobzilla
06-20-2003, 12:35 PM
I know when I modeled my character I really didn't give much thought to how I was modeling it. BIG mistake! The cleaner your mesh is the easier the UV unwrapping is. Still a lot of manipulating, but somewhat easier.
Looks good, BTW. Don't give up...that's the WORST thing a person can do...

Starting to look a little like Don Rickles. (If you don't know who that is, ask your parents :-)
NAAM's ChanLum plugin would probably be perfect for this. Go to http://www.happyship.com and check iot out. I saw some threads a while back about it also.

welpertingermyman!
first of all ---- great work
this guy transports a storry, or let´s say he makes curriouse what his story is. what does this guy do when he´s not going for a swimm ??
the soft painting style is great
it´s allways nice when an image get´s away from a computer look to a natural painted, cartoon etc style
watercolour, aquarell ... perhaps also the backround / scenery should stay in this look or could be something fading out into brushstrokes
for the last images you sent ... like it when it get´s dirty, but the nails and the nose are a litte bit too bloody.
ea braucht jo ned glei a soa schnopsnosn :)
keep on bp´ing

thx for the cc guys! :)
bobzilla: yeah chanlum is cool but i own translucent pro which also does a pretty good job on the skin. :D
mimo8: i agree, i also thought that i overdid it a bit with the bloodiness. really gotta tone down some parts.
well, now i go on painting but unfortunately nothing cg but helping to paint a friends house.:hmm:
