View Full Version : reducing rendering time on reflection
jsahn 09-11-2008, 06:26 PM hi there,
i rendering a football helmet with reflections using mental ray.
the size is 1280x720. the render time is almost an hour for a single frame on my 8-core.
i think the raytraced reflection is what's taking so long.
what'd be the way to reduce the render time?
any thoughts would help.

are you using glossy reflections ?

glossy as in high specularity? yes.
is that what's causing it?

an Hour still seems pretty long for an 8 core machine .
Can u post an image or any reference image so we can look into the complexity ? .
Sharing you mentalray render settings and your material settings will also help .

by turning on progress messages you can get detailed information on the number of rays being cast for eye, reflection, etc. as well as other things that affect render time like tessellation and memory usage.
double check your ray depth limits and make sure it isn't more than necessary
if you are using blurry reflections (example - low glossy value in the mia_mat) make sure you keep the number of samples at an appropriate level

I will say the same than chronic:
Check you ray limit, try to decrease it...
