View Full Version : Modeling: Welding/Collapsing Problem
Xilica 06-04-2003, 11:36 PM Hey everyone! :D
Seem to have encountered a small problem while modeling: My goal is to attach each vert in each black box with its corresponding vertex. I have tried deleting faces and then collapsing or welding and it doesn't seem to work. =/
Anyway help is greatly appreciated.

So you basically want to make a close loop with the pipe, yes?
I can only guess that at that distance apart you don't have your weld threshold high enough. Have you tried moving the verts into position a bit better before you try to weld them?

yea, i want a closed look
i moved them apart so you can see, they are actually very close in the .max
i move them close and set the threshold to 500 and they don't even weld

You are on the right track with deleting faces, so I'm not sure why you'd be having a problem.
Try this:
After deleting the faces on both ends, right-click snap-toggle on your toolbar and select the vertex checkbox only.
With snap toggle on, select each vert and drag them to their corresponding points until the blue crosshair aligns them on top of each other.
Try welding each vert pair after this. I've found quite often max can be finicky with welding unless your verts are right on top of each other, even with a high threshold!:surprised

ok erilaz, i did exactly what you said and i got 8 of the 24 verts to weld
or more to say, 4 of the 12 verts of the side to weld
some just don't weld for some reason... =/

The only other thing I can think of is you got some intersecting edges when you're welding, and max isn't liking it.
Hmmm.... perplexing. Can you post up an image of the final result so far? Maybe I can nut out what it's doing by looking at it.:hmm:
Anybody else got some clues?

alright, i circled the verts which would not collapse or weld together:

thanks for the help btw!!

Have you tried it just with the weld function or have you tried traget weld also?

The problem is that you cannot weld verts like that.
Here's one (of many) workarounds:
Right click and save as - 428kb (http://www.visualboo.com/movies/helpers/tube_workaround.swf)
Hope that helps somewhat.

Hey erilaz, I find that target weld works much better than 3d snap in cases like this. I also have a keyboard shortcut for collapse in editable poly which I'm constantly using. Xilica, as you've probbably realised you will have to delete the overlapping parts of the mesh and join the edges up by hand, as shown below.

Hmm... it's odd, because I've found it to be the opposite. Not sure why. I think I prefer the snap method because I like to model out how it's going to look before I weld the whole mesh together. That way I can replace parts without having detatch or delete parts of the complete mesh.
Hey, as I've said before, whatever works!:D
