Hello,

Hoping someone can help me, I've been tasked with dragging our Local Authority practice into the 21st century by starting to offer clients 3D presentations. We currently use Vectorworks in the office and I've been looking at Cinema 4D to offer that functionality.

Now, being a Local Authority I have to convince them that splashing out on several licencses for C4D is going to reap some benefits. So, I've got the demo version and I'm trying to import Vectorworks drawings without much luck.

Could you guys help me with posting how best works for yourselves? I know there are several methods but I can't work out which is gonna be best to demonstrate how wonderful this package could be.

Thanks guys!

I think you're in luck. Not sure if you're aware, but Maxon and VW are owned by the same company (who's name I won't hazard to spell). So, there's a plugin for exchanging scenes between VW and Cinema. I think you may have to get it from VectorWorks, but if they can't help you I'd give Maxon and call and maybe they can.

there is a special vector works edition of cinema i think...not sure if this is what your talking about...would imagine the demo is different.

personally i would actually talk to maxon about it

http://www.maxon.net/pages/dyn_files/dyn_htx/htx/352/00352_00352.html

"The CINEMA 4D- Special VectorWorks Edition pack consists of the CINEMA 4D R8 application (MAXON's flagship 3D modeling, rendering and animation package), two plugins that enable users to transfer models and materials quickly from VectorWorks to CINEMA 4D (updating, if required), and a free texture CD that includes a host of ready-made architectural materials."

for a sneak peak check out.

other than that i can't tell you anything about vector works...hopefully someone else might be able to help ya...my advice would be talk to maxon....see if you can get the plugins to try with the demo or something...or maybe they have a demo version...

if you have any questions about cinema fire away though bud...

Clown,

We are implementing a similiar transition in our studio, and we are using "Vectorworks Exchange" to get our feet wet. The plug-in costs about $50 direct from Maxxon. It's working pretty good, you just have to be careful to arrange your classes and/or color assignment to your objects. I.e; if you want all your doorknobs to be different colors you must assign a solid and/or class to each individual doorknob. B/c once they get into 4D, you cannot ungroup them, so make sure that you have all your seperate ojects apart from others. They also allow you to "update" files from the original VW file, but that to me can get very confusing. Although recently I've discovered a scale problem when I do the import -- things are coming in roughly 2.8 x the size than in the original size. I got a call into Maxxon about this, and I'll keep you posted..

PS: Would love to see what kind of scenes you generate, as we are new at this as well...

FYI, if separate geometry comes in fused into one object you can split it apart in Cinema using the Structure-->Edit surface-->Explode segments command.

Thanks guys.

I'm aware of the plugin and have been talking to Perry (very helpful indeed), who apparently turned out to be the CEO of Maxon UK!!!

However, as the demo version has no plugin functionality they can't send me the plugin, so I can't then demonstrate to the powers that be how easy it is all hopefully going to be. Maxon have invited me down for the day to demonstrate the plugin etc but again, that doesn't help me justify the costs to my boss.

If someone can help me import stuff enough to show how good C4D could be then that would be a great help indeed.

Thanks again
