Title: Robin Hood
Name: Jose Pardo
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

Practice book cover assignment for Robin Hood. I tried to keep the focus on Robin but still tell as much of a story as a cover would allow. The design of the carriage and castle were somewhat problematic since I didnt want them to take too much attention from Robin.

Comments and crits welcome.

very well done work jose, the colors, light and the whole setting/composition. position of the carriage and the path does take my eyes to the castle in a very nice manner, but after the journey my eyes do come back and stay on Robin, according to your goal...:). i might put some warm/saturated colors on his dress or something, that would strengthen him more again the muted colors of the (very well painted) tree. but thats subjective.

i really like how uve done those trees and leaves (foliage)...:). all in all, a very good looking book cover.

HI Jose,

Curious, was this done for that seminar thing Donato was teaching? I know several folks came out of that with Robin Hood samples. I like the composition for this. I probably would have made that foreground tree a bit longer and really pushed for more of a shadowy foreground with maybe some warm yellow or yellow green spots of light that pass through the trees and hit the cloaks of the men. A real wyeth moody approach. Plus no matter how you lit the scene, the eye path and all the angles would always bring you straight to Robin's face.

You're braver than me. I don't think I could have painted each individual leaf. Nice work.

Thanks for the visit Eric, I wasnt fortunate enough to attend the class, but I got it from the assignment sheet. You make a good point about the lighting, but I think I would have been in way in over my head. As for the leaves, I have to admit it was a custom brush in Photoshop, I wasnt brave enough to paint each one individually.
