View Full Version : Maya Units Fustrations
plotz 06-04-2003, 10:36 PM I'm working on a set pre-viz project where I need to give exact dimensions to the builders in feet.
Since Maya is such a pain when using anything other than the default centimeters, I'm probably just going to do the conversions to feet off-line.
Just wondering how others deal with real-world scale and dimensioning issues.
Do you set your units of measure to the "real thing" and deal with the fact everything you add to the scene will need re-sizing? Work in centimeters and do the math? Or just treat each centimeter as a generic unit (1 cm = 1 foot)?

if you need differnt unit type go to
window>setting s pref> preferences>settings
working units you can change there if you like

I know I can change the working units, from centimeters to feet...that's where the problem begins:(
Maya defaults everything else to centimeters. So if I set my scene units up in feet, but bones, lights, cameras, etc. all come in at a default size in centimeters I have to rescale them all so I can work with them.
For lights and cameras it's not too big of a deal, but for bones it's a real pain. You can only set the default scale multiplier to 5, which makes them look like toothpicks on a 6 foot character.
Additionally when I set up lighting falloff I have to enter HUGE numbers, in order to get my scenes illuminated.
From my research on this in the past, it appears to be a long standing issue dating back to the Power Animator days.

"1cm=1 foot". That is what I do. If you work in anything other than cm Maya makes a conversion node and this can be problematic for dynamics.

I generally just use 'units' in Maya, and use them as whatever I want for the project...

I hear ya man, one of the main things I noticed in Maya when coming from Max is the crap tastic way it measures units. Anyway this is what I was told when I complained about it, "Get Studio Tools". For design work it really kicks Maya's ass around, especially if you have to work from blue prints or diagrams.
humm never scale a bone my friend.. you may have some big trouble lollllll :P
try this instead if your unable to work with these small bones..
DYSPLAY> JOINT SIZE> choose the one you need...
just on top of this you can change the lights and camera too..
