View Full Version : Cinematic Game Icon - character/vehicle/enviroment - akocan
akocan 06-04-2003, 11:11 PM Hello Everyone ;) :bounce:
I am really really excited cause it's the second I'm posting to this forum and the first time that I'm entering a challange though I've been following the forum for a while now.
I am very new to 3D and all I did that could be counted as modeling is some tutorials from 3ds Max 5 and modelling a few houses cause I study architecture.
Even though I now very little 3D, I believe that while preparing the game icon for the challange I will improve my knowledge a lot!
Here come the ideas:
Balle Girl Drilly: She's a girl doing balle and she is so athletic and able to use her body very efficiently that she has been invited as a protector for the city by the governer. She has many abilities especially on kick-boxy things like body fight. But also she can create tornados turning around herself so fast and drill through a wall or so... This is one idea.
Pizzaboy McManiman: This idea is of a boy who's been working in a pizza place for years and became an expert at making pizzas fast and furious ;) But once his evil boss fires him, he has to take revenge. Through his way, he has to beat the many bodyguards and other enemies... (Very cliché but fun I guess...) Anyways, he has fighting abilities as well as the great pizza turning and ninja-star pizza's that he makes...
So these two are the ideas I came up with. I'm not sure which one to use. I will post two sketches tomorrow... We'll see how it goes. I hope I improve myself while enjoying with you all. A bit nervous though... ..
Sincerely

Theres no need to be nervous, i'm pretty sure that we all just do these competitions because we learn a lot and most importantly because they are fun. So tip of the day is 'enjoy yourself'. Welcome aboard!

Hello everyone. didn't get any feedback but I made my choice. I'll go with the pizza boy because it will be easier to model him since you know, I'm a newbie.
so, I'll start modelling today. and see how this will all go....
bye for now.

Oh, a good solution!!!
Hi once more!
I've heard from many people that the images i've been posting were not seen on the forum. So I deleted all those posts and figured out a way.. The quality is not good but I could make them less then 20 kb...
So here they are.. first the sketches...

Today I might add another pic. I'll start head modelling but we'll see..

Though don't put all your hopes on my modelling;) You might not get what you expect.. You might not get less then what you expect.. So don't expect I'd say ;) Don't you see the pizza? A wheel would be less solid....

Hi everyone. today I could get to the head modelling.
:buttrock: :buttrock: thank you Jelwa for your support..
I drew a left and a front picture and used them as guidlines. This is what came up. I guess I'll have to add much more detail.

06-06-2003, 04:35 PM
hello fist. thank you for your thoughts about my drawings. actually the drawings are just drafts. I mean I don't expect to do them exactly because they are too free. probably a very experienced modeller would have a hard time modelling the exact same thing that I drew.. so I try to make something similar to that..
Thanks...

:bounce: Hi...some thoughts...come down to low resolution on your model and try to make the holes for the eyes and details u want to give to the nose and mouth..Don't look at a smoothed version of what u do...not yet...u must be happuy first with what u see in low polygon....just some thoughts...:wavey:
Keep it up...i will be back!

dimitris is right. block out in low poly how the whole character would look and start adding details after u are comfortable with the low res version. Cheers.

06-07-2003, 12:35 AM
Hello once more.
Thank you dimitris and dom... I did try to make your suggestions useful. I did work on the head in low polygon a bit. I made a more understandable mouth. I don't want a nose. the big thing on his face might be the nose. I also made the head thinner all over because the thing I drew was like that...
I made eye holes but I'm not sure if this one looks better..
I can't find details to add ;( help me with this please!!!
Thank you all..
Sincerely
Aearon
06-07-2003, 07:58 AM
i'll help you ;)
the nose looks nothing like your concept, it's totally integrated with the head on your model, but in the sketch it round and just sticks out from the face (.like it should)
i think you should kill the "nose" in your model, and extrude one from the face
you could also try to round the whole model off more (just a matter of pulling some verts..)

:bounce: Three Challenges back i was making my first Head on the Living toon 3D challenge and Equinox was kind to give me a link to Wiro's tutorial for head modeling ...although the tutorial is for realisticbase of a human head not cartoonish, the rules and moves are pretty much the same!!!

first of all, thank you fist and dimitris for your support..
fist: well I guess the image of the charachters head I had in mind was like the one I modeled. Becase it doesn't have a ugly big nose. it has a face growing to a nose .. like the character in The Chubbchubbs. So I believe it is better this way. Any thoughts? :bounce: :bounce:
dimitris: thank you for the tutorial. it is quite detailed but as you said, it's a tutorial for a realistic face..
I'm looking at it right now to see if I could use any parts of it for my character... :bounce: :bounce:
I'll do a bit of body modelling today if I can..
I'm attaching the refrence pics for the head...

Hi there,
sometimes is quite helpful to drow a cage on your concept drawing so you could better work with poly or mesh. the main rule is to avoid triangles cuz when you apply mesh smooth it can look bad. But sometimes triangles can be a great help with wrinkles modeling.
Take care

Hi all..
Thank you a lot Jelwa for all that time you took to draw on my pic and so on. from now on, I'll try to do what you've told me. As far as I understood, you tell me to draw the refrence pics with a cage and make the poly parts match those cages?
I've started building the upper body. it's very very simple. no details or so..
I'm attaching it..
Uhhh.. Too much more to learn!!!

Yes Acocan you understood well, Try to model your char like you were sculptureing(?) observe everything from different angles until it will look ok.

Hello everyone..
Thanks Jelwa again for every single thing you give as a advice..
Another update.. I did the body and a bit of a clothing. Actually all that clothing will be covered with an apron. by the way the thing on his left chest on the shirt is a pocket.. ;) that's the best I could do. I have no patience left for today I guess.. of this 3D requires a lot of patience, a lot!!!!

don't worry...
maybe it's not as intuitive as 2d work, but you'll get the hang of it and really speed up your modeling in no time! just don't give up! :shame:
it's coming along alright, but the elbow area looks really thin to me! ;)

HELLO EVERYONE after a very long pause of 3 days...
As I told, I am a newbie and this is the first time that I'm modelling a character.. I've always modelled buildings before...
I was about to give up because this takes too much time and requires a lot of patience and I can never get what I expect...
Anyways, Today I woke up and told to myself, come on, complete this!! ;) So a success story began ;) ;) :buttrock: :buttrock:
I've added the hands and the shoes to this mcmaniman man... Not good, I know.. But at least there's some progress I believe.. Any comments will be very very very much appreciated!!!!!
By the way, please go to www.azizk.com for better quality images... I can't post the quality ones because of size limit...
Sincerely
Aearon
06-11-2003, 04:53 PM
rest assured, you did make progress
why does everything look so square / edgy though? beveled edges everywhere ? i'd like it better if everything was a bit smoother, but maybe this is what you wanted
you CAN post the high quality images on http://www.cgchallenge.com/challenge_view.php?challenge_id=34 btw (if you haven't already done so)
nice progress!
and it doesn't matter if you just started with 3d or if you are working at pixar as long as you enjoy the challenge and have fun
the best thing is that you will learn really much in these challenges, at least I did it ;)
here are some suggestions...at the moment it looks a bit boxy as fist allready said - so I would pull some edges (shown in my picture)

just a suggestion :p

and iC4-: Oh my! Thank you for taking all this time to show me how to improve by working on the pic. I posted.. Thanks a lot.. I'll work on that edges tonight. and I also want to rig this if possible. It'll be the second time I'm trying to rig..
We'll see what will come out..
So I go to get riggy with it ;)
Love to all ;) ;)

Nice comments and advice, bravo iC4......... :applause:
akocan: I think for a first 3D model it's great. Before you know it it will be intuitive as is 2D for you now.I like your sketch/concepts.And I can only say ditto to all iC4 and Fist have already stated.
Just keep going, you'll get there before you know it,you are on the right track, first of all with the right attitude.Just keep pulling, tweaking and messing with those verts.Good luck and have fun.

i hope nobody takes offense, but i can't resist the urge to quote pulp fiction
The Wolf: "Well, let's not start sucking each other's d!cks just yet."
hehe, seriously though, thanks for the nice comments in my thread akocan. It's a pleasure to reply to your thread and i have my reasons. Your drawing style has something i really like, and i'm absolutely sure you'll become a great 3d artist if you keep the ball rolling, so do it :D
As my main man Virtuoso said, keep tweaking the mesh. Don't rush the modeling stage, remember you have a lot of time left. Don't be afraid of redoing sections of the mesh if you don't get a good result, i believe that's a good way to do your first few models. You'll get it to look better then you expected in no time!

akocan
06-12-2003, 05:58 AM
hi schmu_20mol.
Thank you for relieving me. I actually can't say much about the package I am working with but let me tell you everything specifically... I believe it's in there somewhere ;)
I use 3Ds Max 5.0. All of the modelling I've done so far is out of boxes or other shapes. Only the hand and the eyebrows are made by first drawing a line, and then extruding. At the end, I did a meshsmooth modifier illiterations 2. So this is all I did.. If there's any, ANY little detail that's coming to your mind about the things I told, I'd be glad to hear!

Hi there Akocan,
your char. can move but the mesh deforms not quite good. I ll give you a few tips how make a rigging.
1.i use (mostly) character studio, since uou work with 3dmax you know about this program
2. I do not use phisique i prefer skin wich is better cuz you have complet control over weights.
3. i put the skin modyfier below meshsmooth wich i keep off until the char. can move correctly.
4.there is a button i mesh smooth render literation...i use this instead working with smoothted model in the viewport.
5.About the skin you have to pay attention to areas like shoulders knees and pelvis. Head stays rigid.
6.Use wheights table a great tool to control vert.
7. In bending areas u can use skin gismos, it can solve many problems.
8.You can check out how your char is movin by loading a bip files with motion data simply by clicin a load file button:).
8.No rush
9.Eat somethig sometimes go with your friends and have a bier:)
Take care:wavey: i hope im helpful

hello everyone. I have a character studio question.. i need some help..
I watched a tutorial that in the figure mode, the biped could be easily scaled, moved and so on..
I can scale the biped but when I try to move for ex. the upper leg either ways, it doesn move to right or left. it moves connected to the pelvis, the reqular movement...
To sum it up, could you help me so that I can fit that biped into my modelling?
sincerely
Kozlow
06-13-2003, 10:27 AM
Hi there Acocan you have to scale the pelvis in orther to obtain dessired position fot your leg. If this is what you'd like to do.
If not write some more maybe i can help.

Hello everyone..

and here I come back..
Nothing much to add but I did a sketch for the vehicle..
it is a flying saucer type of thing which he stands in. like the one that green goblin has in spiderman..
it has blades on the sides.. after I did the sketch, I realized that this looks a bit like beyblade ;)
but I like the idea anyways, so I'm going to do this...

Hi there Acocan,
its going good, about the character studio problems, i did download the file but couldn see maybe it was compresed with a codec that i do not have. So sorry for that, i would be glad if i can help with character studio some more.
The vehicle reminds me a bit some part of a machine i use for cofee grinding :) Will it fly by spining around itself or some other way?Keep going

hi all.
Konic: Thank you for those nice words..
Jelwa: Actually the codec is DivX Pro 5.03 .. My suggestion is this: go to www.k-lite.tk and download the "Kazaa Lite Codec Pack" Then every single thing will work..
And once you see the video, you'll see the problems I'm facing..
About the vehicle, yes I want it to spin around itself (The blades) and fly like that but I didn't model it seperately so I can't animate it.. ;/
Thank you all..
Updates coming soon..
