View Full Version : Texturing this Tree... how?

Ok, I'm completely lost on this one. I have this tree model (see below) that I need to add a bark texture to. I've tried individually selecting each root to add a cylindrical UVW map... but that proved unsuccessful.

My next attempt was with Unwrap UVW, but after unwrapping the mesh, I have no idea what to do from there... any insight on how this can be textured would be very helpful to me! Thanks!

Some more info; I'm using 3ds max 5, the tree is one single element, and I have a tiling bark texture ready to go...

Something like this is always going to be difficult but to simplify it a little you need to get the roots into a more convenient position.
There's a number of ways to do that but I think here you could try adding a morph of the tree, in that morph straighten out all the roots and add the mapping to it. This mapping will carry through to the original mesh.
From this starting point you can use unwrap edit to fine tune it all.

As a quickie, you could try a procedural. No uvs required.

Or perhaps you could use face-mapping. Not that great though.

The morph idea is probably the best bet.

posm: prior to reading your post I actually decided to go with procedurals, and I'm very pleased with the result :)

Thanks for your input!
