View Full Version : plug-ins:condensation,sweat
sebakrembo 06-04-2003, 07:49 PM Hello all..
I have a simple question, have tried to creat water drops ,condensation like on glass, but could not get any satising results, what is the best plug-in (or method) i should use ??
The water drops should be on a window glass, architectural render with VIZ...(and so, no spray-mods).
And while at it, purring water in a fountain....same problem of the drops...
Anyone ??

I don't know about plugins, but check out the technique used in Brian Taylor's Rustboy:
http://www.rustboy.com/rustweb.htm
Section 3 in the 'making of' shows a way to do water on glass using a texture method.

I did this with an alpha mask and a bump derived from the alpha:

Don't know how well it would work for water or for an animation.

i don't know if it would be useful, but i think that older plugin called Glider can make particles contrained to a surface. although its not free, it is a cheap (about US$60 i think) plugin. i don't think this would be useful for condensation on glass, but it might be useful if you wanted condensation on a solid surface, like a soda can or something

Well. first of all tnx for the super-fast reply...
I guess i did not explained myself well.. i am talking about realistic ONE FRAME render, no animation... but the drops should look realistic with their trails.
The glider (digmation) is a good plug for animation,a space wrap i used to wonder into long ago... :-) but in my case, it will not do..
the "stroker" method is more like it, but i think it will not work on condensation drops, where the material is clear refrecting water...
and the other problem, with no plug in will be to model hundreds of small drops, with their trails.. not to mention the file-weight...
And right.. i said viz... so no particval systems or partical spray here... but there must be a way, i know there is...

I don't know thing one about viz, so I'll take a stab in the dark.
How about Scatter?
Model a drop with a tail, model a smaller drop with no tail just for variety, then get crazy with the cheese whiz ala Scatter.

thanks, thought about that too.... but there must be a more elegant and accurate way to do so...
I used to know a plug from an independent max freak that was called drop-it but can't find it anymore , it was an old max plugin...
so i thought maybe someone knows how it is called these days (probably got bought by some big company...) .. used to be freeware..
anyway the scatter would work but will produce a heavy file (also for calculations of the render itself...)

Got a digital camera? Go the ghetto route. Spray some water on a window, take a picture through the window, preferrably against a solid bkg like the sky.
Or you might be able to use some of these textures?

great texture resource there ... but i am still looking for a way to get real object render , and no texture...
I am sure that site you posted will be used for future projects, some great textures there...

Why not Scatter some low-res objects, use MeshSmooth for Render-time tesselation, use refraction, etc. That's the way I'd go for a still.

Simple white and black image of drops. one in the displacment slot and use it again to create a raytraced material. what you get with the displament is actual 3d geometry so with the raytraced materail you can get cuastics refraction and reflection
