hey.

everytime i model something in max, i use refrence pics - however, i can only use background, because when i put it on a "panel" object, the quality of the pics are horriffic. however, there are many problem with the background feature, and it can "crash" a lot of times - that is, move to other viewports, or just dissappear and reappere in diffrent sizes.

so i was wondering if there is anyway i can put a panel with render quality textures? or at least one that has a reasonable quality? (and not about 10 pixels of what vaguely resembles the picture i put)

This sounds strange to me, that bitmaps would display right as background but not on planes, and it raises a couple questions: what is your graphic card ? what are the display drivers you are using in viewports ?
Also, how do you set up your reference planes ? UVMaps and Unwrap might help ?

i dont believe the problem comes from my computer -

a 2.5 gigahertz pentium 4 with 256 ddr ram and gefroce 4200 ti 128 mb.

i use the opengl in max.

and it makes perfect sense, actually - i know that if i was animating a really complicated model, i wouldnt want great quality - just something pixely so as i can see the texture, but still keep my pc alive.

usually this is adjustable in the driver setup within max:

customize --> Preferences --> viewports tab --> configure driver button

there should be buttons there for background and download texture sizes... (at least there are with the latest nvidia drivers with my gf4 4200 ti 128) but the biggest they go is to 1024 and that is teh background, the download (texture) res is limited to 512...so thats the best you can get

if you really MUST have higher res images, break your reference planes and your reference image up into smaller pieces so each little section is 512, resulting in a higher overall percieved resolution. its kinda a pain, but its the best you can do unless you use custom drivers (i think the wildcat drivers go higher, but not at work now so can't check).

Er, no, you can check the checkboxes "Match Bitmap as Close as Possible" and it'll try and upload the bitmap in its original resolution. I've successfully loaded very very highres pictures in there without too much trouble. Takes a while to load though.

Anyway, it's definitely able to break the 512 limit for viewport-textures.

If you set Download Texture Size to Match Bitmap Size it will use the best matching resolution (4096 is max according to the docs).

Still don't understand why this isn't the default.
