Hey everyone,

This is a project I've been working on in my spare time for a friend of mine. She's a salsa instructor in the bay area, and I wanted to create something for my portfolio based on stylizing a real person for an animation. The final end product is located here:

You can poke around the website to see actual pictures of her to compare to.

Stills of the dance are here:

I posted a long time ago about my modeling process I think, but it basically involved taking pictures of her and working from the reference to create the look. I did the dance itself by recording her doing some steps and then stylizing the movement a bit. Anyway, these are the final results. Hope you enjoy them, I'd love your critique!

Thanks,

Very nice modell! :D But i do think it seems a bit dead in the actuall movie? Maybe more facial expressions? And quicker movements? But, a very nice model :)

Thanks! Yeah, I skimped a bit on the facial rig for this one :/ For the next one I'll work on expressions more.

Hey Jesse, it's not rotoscoped... I recorded her for reference because she had specific moves she wanted in the dance, but the majority is done 'free-hand' with her critiquing along the way.
mohsen, glad you liked the hair! It's all done in Maya 8.5 actually, using the built-in hair setup and shading with paint fx. My blog has kind of the process outlined, if you want to take a look. The latest Maya hair is actually really good with collisions and simulation:
