View Full Version : Render Settings Window blank
desirefly 09-09-2008, 06:17 AM Hey everyone,
I am having an issue with my Mental Ray settings. I have been working on a model, and rendering it out occassionally through mental ray to see how its coming along.
After about v.18 of my file, when I went into the render settings, the window was blank with no options, and when I tried to switch "Render Using" to mental ray, I got this error:
//Error: Cannot use data of type in a scalar operation
... I have never seen this before and quite frankly, I have tried everything including a complete reinstall with no luck. If anyone has any advice on how to fix this issue, I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thanks

clear out your preferences folder, usually found in your user directory
\username\maya\prefs or
\username\documents\maya\prefs
when maya runs if it doesnt detect the folder as existing it makes a new one with default settings
you may want to move the folder to a different location, if you have any custom shelves, or window settings, and slowly add back one thing at a time

hey, thanks for the help
I ended up deleting the preferences folder the first time and it didn't work. But I did end up solving the problem. It seems there was a bad mental ray node in the scene file. I had to open a new scene, and setup the mental ray settings, then save it and import the scene into that.
That seemed to work fine, thanks for the help!

This happened to me. Pretty scarring!!
The workaroun on this to me it was start a new session of Maya. Open the problematic scene. DonŽt try to open the render globals window... or youŽll have to start over. Go to the Rendering menu then Render>Render Using> Maya Software. Now you can open the Render Globals again.

Yeah, It was common to open the scene at times and be able to have the software option, and open it others and get no options. This was one of the strangest things about this problem. But even with the software option available, the Mental Ray tab would be blank.
To anyone who comes across this and is having a similar problem, I would highly suggest restarting maya with new preferences, create a new scene, set up your render settings... do a test render, then import your scene and clean it up, then save. In my case, I had to do this on another station all together for it to work.
Thanks for the replies everyone, if anyone has more information on this, please post

it happens to me if I try to open up the tab before Maya completes initialization. Typically all of the renderer windows are blank with that same error. I just shut down Maya and restart letting it complete its initialization once the scene or blank scene appears.

yep it sucks. this happens allll the time in maya.
there really is no excuse for this kind of behaviour in a modern app.
