View Full Version : 3D Channel Extract AE CS3
lucidcrimson 09-08-2008, 05:25 AM Hi,
I'm doing a a rack focus on a piece so I rendered out a separate z-depth pass in Maya as an RLA sequence. I have the extracted z-depth channel all right and tight, but I forgot how to use that channel to apply the blur to the other layers. It would be great if someone could help me since I didn't find any tutorials on the subject.

If you have RLA you dont have to extract anything. Z channel will be embedded in that. Apply depth of field effect and change maximum radius and focal plane thickness. Then set the Focal Plane value. To get specific value, click on the area with the select tool, exact values of that panel will be displayed in the info panel.

Thank you for your help. But maybe I should re-phrase my question, "How do I get the z-channel from the RLA sequence to control an effect on another targa sequence." I didn't have Mental Ray render the z-depth with my diffuse pass. It's a completely separate pass. I found out how to do the rack focus with the lens blur effect though, but I still have some fog to do using that channel.

I have tried but I didn't find any way to map luminance channel to Z depth channel and then use Fog 3D effect with it. AE doesn't support this feature. If you own Fusion application you can do it easily there. If you are interested you can visit this tutorial (http://www.cgsutra.com/eyeon_fusion_tutorials/fog_3d_tool/creating_fog_in_fusion.php).

Ok, thanks a lot. I don't have access to Fusion, but I do to Combustion. Maybe I can download a trial version of Fusion or something....

you set the z-depth pass as a track matte, probably on "Luma"
you make an adjustment layer with a blur on it, then put the z-depth pass above it. Then, on the adjustment layer, set the track matte to "Luma". Done. :) You can put a levels effect on the z-depth to adjust it if neccessary.

I belive in AE just add a 3d Channel extract Filter, this should bring forth the innadrs of the .RLA file.
