View Full Version : White objects aren't white: renders grey

Hi, I want to make an object white, let's say a sphere. I'm using HDRI * 2 point lights. The color on the blinn shader is 1.00 (100%) white. When I render the image only the highlight is white,
the rest of the object falls away to grey. If I increase the ambient color, or even the main
color, it becomes blown out. I want to use white on a car & even some bottles.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A white sphere will render black if it receives no illumination. You can make it white by adding ambience or incandescence but they are CG tricks to create some illumination when there is none (or not enough).

From what you described, I would suggest to start by not using amb or incan (save them for last resort) and try increasing the intensity (colorGain) of the HDR.

Are you using IBL or something else? And are you using final gather? or GI?

And with an exposure node (tone mapping) you can brighten things up while maintaining some control over what happens to the highlights.
