This is gorgeous, Phil - and right up my street. I always have the urge to put tiny golden windows in my trees ;) The atmospherics make the image for me - the soft, diffuse light and deep mist are just wonderful. Good to see you around! Phil

Cosy, warm and misterious. Love this image man.

A quick question if you dont mind:

In the middle of the tree you put some red bleeding on the trunk. Was that made with an overlay layer on top of it?
Im asking because Im still deciding between trying to reach the colors with brushes in one layer or making use of blending modes in PS.

Cheers man.

I usually define color in a painting by using both methods but, almost always create local color with the old brush to canvas method first. Then from there, depending on what I'm trying to do with my light I may use blending modes to further accentuate a particular color or temperature of light and shadow.

Hi Philip,
that`s exactly your style :) another great work from you! What I like most are the colours. They match perfectly! Also the windows are very nicely integrated into the tree. Good!

Brilliant as usual Philip. The amount of texture in your work is astounding and was wondering, do you texture totally from the brushes themselves or do you use any filtering/layer effects.

Thanks for sharing another brilliant piece!

Hey Dusty-

Thanks for the note- I use a combination of painting and drawing, custom brushes, texture brushes, and layering of some photo texture here and there until something sticks. I recall painting this one over about 5 times until i got the look I was going for. Never quite nailed exactly what I saw in my head but got close- and then the deadline came:)

Hope that helps.

brilliant work again - I love the awesome mood it has. The volumetric lighting is excellent, too. Your artwork is "out of this world" again. 5*

Looking forward to your book!

That really looks great. Excellent sense of depth. It's a little hard for me to grasp the scale of the tree, but that could just be me.

The rest of your portfolio is really beautiful as well. Looking forward to this book you mentioned. :)

I totally agree on the issue of scale. It was something that always bugged me about the piece as well. With the cards being so small its always tough to cram all the information necessary to fullflill the assignment and read at a size just a bit larger than a postage stamp- in addition, the usual trick is the use of a human for reference of scale but, the brief didn't include that or really anything else to establish it. So- great observation, one I didn't quite figure out how to resolve...thats what the next painting is for:)

Thanks-

Pointers- tough to cram all the info I can think of in this space but, I can reduce it down to this- practice practice, and more practice. Really, thats it. Break your images down to steps that allow you to focus on specific aspects of good picture making until they meet your standards and move on. For example, as my course in CGWorkshops clearly shows, think; concept, composition, perspective/anatomy, value structure/lighting, color theory, and depth atmosphere and scale.

And- look at tons and tons of work - not just what is popular on this forum or any other but, what is popular in international illustration, fine arts, and the long rich history of art.

Hope that helps:)
