Title: EVIL WITCH
Name: Sven Geruschkat
Country: Germany
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop

Hi!

Time to share my latest work. Maybe, you enjoy it.
I got inspired by a little sketch done for Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". The scene depicts the evil queen disguised as a witch. Ready to give the poisoned apple. With this model, I will test different lights/environments, materials, camera- and compositing effects. Funny thing though: I decided to show this picture in a less moody light-setup, otherwise nobody could see the effort that went into it. Of course, I like to know, what do you think of it?

This model was done with 3dsmax, Mudbox, Mental Ray and Photoshop (textures only). No lights, only FG/IBL. Exposure controlled. No DoF. Image's gamma is 2.2 (for LCD-screens).

Hello all!
Thank you all, for your kind comments so far. I didn't expect such a positive response.
Here are 2 more pics. Maybe you'll find them interesting.

And yes, caustics on the apple... This is worth a thread of it's own. Of course, you (and me) would expect some caustic refractions on the apple. I mean, that was the whole idea behind those waterdrops. But realism isn't always as expected. In short, I would explain the missing caustics due to the abscence of a very intense direct light, and the indirect light wasn't strong enough to produce noticeable caustics. (I tested it with a real apple, and it was like the rendering, so it was fine with me)

-Pasi-

Whilst I respect your opinion, I must wholeheartedly disagree about the image not having any depth. If anything, I think there's a real depth to the image that really pushes the witches face right out at you.

I think this is one of the best portraits I've seen on these forums and I absolutley love the style, the texturing etc. I'd love to see a breakdown of how the image was put together.

kidcodea

with more dramatic lightning this would rule.
looks too modern perfect ilumination to be creepy. looks like a studio set for a product shoot... which doesnt really blend with the witch mood...does it?
would also make it look less flat...
other than that... love it.

Hello...

@SulaMoon
- Interesting. I haven't seen that picture until now.

Basically, I mixed "Sleeping Beauty - Witch" (60%), with "Legend - Swamp Witch" (20%) and with a realistic old woman (20%). Maybe the "Star Wars - Imperator" is in there too...

@pwallin
- I know, what you mean. But since this is an ongoing project, I thought for the start something simple (striking) and plain would be the best to show. I already played with spooky lights and depth of field etc. But due to the long render times (FG+SSS+Displace=rendertimekiller), that will be something for the future.

@kidcodea
- Yes I know, I also mentioned that in the image's description. The hdr-environment is my room+window. Not very moody. But otherwise, I think it's more fun, to see everything.

I really have to say it's a crying shame you took so little efford to make her face a little less symmetrical. Sure, there are some warts here and there, but the first thing that jumped me when I looked at this image is that the skin color and even the wrinkles are mirrored. This is especially obvious along her nose.

This really is a shame, because by the looks of things you've put quite a bit of work in the details, which is why I can't understand why you've overlooked something so obvious.

I'm not saying I could've done a better job though, and if you put these nitpicks aside it really is a wonderful image. Reminds me a lot of the witch Eucalypta from the old "Paulus de Boskabouter", an old Dutch hearing-show by Jean Dulieu I grew up with.

but the first thing that jumped me when I looked at this image is that the skin color and even the wrinkles are mirrored.

Have to agree here, that was the second thing to jump out at me.

The first thing was how freaking great the image was!
Awesome job! (But fix the texture mirroring if you get a chance)

That's what I really like about the image in that the details really pop because of the lighting. I think the the whole uplit face thingy is probably what almost anyone would have done but I love the fact that you see evertything warts an all - I just realised that the skin detailing and eyse are quite similair to a really amazing portrait of an old sailor man that Rick Baker did - was that one of your inspirations by any chance?

@ Hecatomb

There!!! :) Yes, I mirrored... Would anybody belive me, when I say, I left it on purpose?! Just to tease you?
But asymmetry, was not a priority for me. (Time and texture sizes played a role too.)
I want to understand materials and light first, before I spend time with the second half of a face. Afterall, this is a project for research and to understand basic things...
I promise, my future heads will be fully asymmetrical :)
http://www.svenger.de/pages/portfolio/3Dhipoly/images/witch_close2_2.jpghttp://www.svenger.de/pages/portfolio/3Dhipoly/images/witch_hdr_wall_02.jpg

@ csutcliffe

Funny, you mentioned something indirectly, why I'm doing this. Surely, I've seen Rick Baker's work. Needless to say, that he is lightyears ahead concerning sculpting etc. But all these superb artworks done with Z-Brush are lacking cool renderings/shaders/materials etc... (my opinion, no offense). There is still this gap, wich is hard to overcome. That's where I'm up to.

There's a tremendeous accuracy of details in this picture.
The old woman's expression is powerful : she seems for real.

Very "beautiful" image and the quality of the textures and model style is inspiring!! The only problem I see with this render is the BG... it would help a lot if you change it to a more moody place. It will also make the image stronger. Right now, the power of the image to transport you to "another world" is broken by that BG, at least for me.

Besides that little detail, awesome work!!

Thats bloody fantastic. The little details not only to the Witch herself but to the hat as well are just ace. The only thing I could possibly find out of place(and this is really nit-pick'in) is the apple but even that is ace with the water dropplets added - to be honest I wouldnt even worry about it.

The eyes I noticed too but then again I think its supposed to be a Queen in disguise. I feel thats important element and is the story to the picture: She isnt what she appears to be. Say you were about to accept her offer of the apple, its almost as if a friend snatches your hand at the last moment to say "Stop! Look at her eyes! She is NO old lady!".

So yes, top marks.

Sven, I agree with the other fellas about the witch's eyes. When you look a bit closer, it's true that a woman so old cannot have eyes like that, I mean clean and good eyes. I would give her for about 90 years old, at least. Dirt them a bit, perhaps make her blind also, that way the true evil lady will come out^^

Could you post a wire of the scene??? Just fond of of staring at wireframes:beer:

I agree that style and rendering is very nice, but it gives me a headace because lack of strong mood of lighting, or even slighest hint about DOF. Everything is so over sharp I do not know where to concentrate!

I see this image more as a very good but "typical computerish" image like: "look what amount detail you can see" -thing.

I mean that it would be so darn good image when it would push witches face even more to a viewer using DOF, lights and colors.

Hi!

I appreciate all your criticism. I will consider everything what was mentioned. Again, thank you all for your comments.

Concerning depth of field, chromatic abberation, light bending etc.:
The reason, why DOF is missing, is the horrendous rendertime. Blame it on the SSS-FastSkinShader. FG+SSS+Displace+DOF = 20 hours rendertime. No fun at all. I still need a small renderfarm :) . But when I have time and the necessary computing power, I will render everything. That's why the model was created, to experiment with the camera and lights.

Concerning lights and background:
I will even go to some magical places to capture hdr-lightprobes and backgrounds.

Concerning blind eye(s):
Funny, the first thing I made were foggy eyes. But then this intriguing look was lost. I couldn't find a satisfying solution. At one point I had the same thoughts as "BOONE" mentioned above. So I left it.

I was just wondering how you wen about getting so much detail. At 1st I thought maybe you used a really cool displacement but you don't mention any appliation like mudbox or zbrush. It would be great if you could maybe explain your method.

great work

Not too shabby. This is obviously some amazing work. I really like the detail's in the hat but honestly It seems a little over worked to me. theres a little to much detail everywhere. and nothing really stands out. there's no clear focal point to the image and that seems to distract me some. non the less. great work. ^-^

Hi,

Yes, you are right. The setup is easy. No lightsources. "Just" a sphere around the scene with a hdr-image, that illuminates everything via final gathering. And a hdr-image for the background. I take my own lightprobes with my mirrorball. But the hard part lies in materials. Today, on my website are 3 renderings with different hdr-environment-spheres. I will go to some interesting places, to take more lightprobes and re-render the scene.

Good gosh dude: THAT'S AMAZING!!!

The skin, the textures, the expression, the little trinkets on her head, the lighting, the modeling, the hair, (or what's left of hers lol) everything is so awesome!

I especially like the daddy long legs on her head! :D Also the droplets of water on the apple are very realistic, but they should be sort of streaked down, not just sitting there.

Also the fabric on her head is very good, but the piece above her right eye is sort of floating a little too much. I understand the reason you executed the background as you did, but if you do it right, you can still have a creepy background, and have everyone recognize the amount of effort you put into it. :)

For dramatic lighting, you might consider a lightning flash as a light source on a stormy night. The harsh light would add drama, and mean that most of the background would be pretty dark while keeping the face in sharp detail. After all, the witch showed up on a dark, stormy night.

To fix the render times, try compositing the witch separately from the background. You could also use the environment as an HDRI for the rendering of the witch. That is... if your package allows for dome rendering... Or maybe you could make a panorama. The HDRI would not need the detail that the viewable background in the pic would need.

When you get a chance, you might want to go over the face textures, as they seem too pink and too regular. Adding some wetness from a thunderstorm-type scene would also help the look of the skin.

It's wonderful modeling and a nice interpretation of the witch from Sleeping Beauty.

I am an artist ...I was born one ...most of my work is pencil sketchs... I long to be able to do what this artist does ..no matter what small errors anyone finds with his work to me its what I hope to be able to do ...so from my humble art abilities I give you 5 Stars ***** but know I would give you a thousand more.... cuz to me you did a bitchen job in its creation ...I loved it and I am very impressed ...will love to see more.

@ Hecatomb

Give you 5 stars
