For the Polygon Mirror, for exemple, you can get the vertices merged. For bones, the Mirror connects them to parent (a duplicated arm is connected to the spine).
Can you also mirror the left side (for instance) without having any objects or vertices in the zero-axis? For example, 0X is on the left with the bar | representing the zero-X axis, can you mirror so that the result looks like below. The dashes below are used only for space delimiters.
0 X---------------------|---------------------X 0

Cory at a/w said he had to fight hard to add that. He said that alot of games people complained that after you mirrored the geometry that you then had to reverse the normals. So alot of people doing polygon work found it annoying with duplicate.
What I mean is that it seems like Maya can only mirror like this. Here, 0X represent an object:
0XXO
but can it mirror like this?:
0X......................................|.........................................X0
where | is the 0-x axis and ... represent blanks. That is, there'
s nothing between the 0-x axis and the object 0X that we want to mirror across the 0-x axis.
Thanks.

move the pivot point
Thanks. I always forget about the pivot point. :)

Where should the pivot point be?? I get this problem when I mirror. When I centre the pivot point on the right half I get the same gap in between.
I tried to move the pivot point of the object being mirror but when I mirror, the mirrored or new object is always next to the original object. What did I do wrong? That is, I cannot mirror like this:
o....................................|.......................................o
where o is the object mirrored and | is the center of x-axis and ..... are just spaces.
Thanks.

what happens if you move the vertices (rather than the object itself) the distance you want away from the mirror axis?

if you ever have problems with the Duplicate tool, move your pivot to the absolute edge with the snap to point tool the go into your options for Duplicate and go Edit->Reset Settings.
Then you can go -1 for X,Y,or Z to create a mirror. Its pretty foolproof. If that still doesn't work then print screen your settings or whatever the problem with the tool here...and we'll get it.
playmesumch00ns--- the pivot only moves with the object, not the component...so if you have your pivot at where you want the mirror to take place, then move a row of vertices back then the pivot will not be affected.
Sorry, it works for me now. I just move the objects' pivot point to the mirror center and mirror.
Thanks.
