View Full Version : Hair Buns
faedri 09-06-2008, 10:43 PM I'm having a heck of the time with this girl's buns. First of all, I know the lighting is different on each of the buns..but which bun do you like better? I plan on matching the light source for the favored bun. I don't really have a reference for her buns, which makes it more of a pain! I think her hair may be too shiny too...thoughts? Thanks in advance!
P.S. The tops of the buns are unfinished.

I like the left bun, but that may just be me. The lighting on that bun is more in keeping with the rest of the hair, and it's shape goes better with the face... Try to make them as symmetrical as possible, although with the part maybe the one on my right should be slightly bigger. It's hair, so it doesn't have to be perfect, but right now it looks to me as though the one on my right is slightly smaller and slightly higher. Just my two cents.

Thanks Helenlyn (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=342839) :) Yah, you're right. I measured the right bun and it seems to be about an inch wider! I hadn't planned on making the two buns identical but that is a bit off..even for hair! I think I'm going to leave the slightly higher aspect though..just to make it seem a little less perfect and more real. Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated.

If you looked at the thumbnail of your attachment, and drew arrows pointing at the direction of the highlights on the head, you would see at least 3 different directional arrows for the hair, the top, the LH side, and the lower front, none of which correspond to the light shining on the nose and chin (and odd parts of one cheekbone and the opposite eyelid). The highlights should all look like they are from the same direction.
Also, you have used so much white for these off-kilter highlights on the hair, that she looks prematurely gray, or is very old, with a very young face...
The chin is also too pointed on the bottom. There is a jawbone beneath that skin, and it does not come to such a sharp point. Imagine how her teeth would be set in that jaw!
