View Full Version : Animation - Ringling Thesis - Daydream
DaneStogner 06-04-2003, 10:49 AM Hey everyone
This is my thesis animation for Ringling School. Many aspects of the animation were experimental for me. I'd love any feedback, critiques and suggestions.

Thank you."unique" is quite a compliment.
Technically, what is the strongest aspectof this piece? I enjoy the entire process... im just not sure what stands out right now.
Thanks again for takin the time to give me feedback.

I would say the best part is the lighting. the particle shots could use some extra interest, right now they are sorta slow moving and lacking something. overall great work.

thanks. i've always been fond of lighting.
the particle shots were my first ever. that whole series of shots was a technical experiment for me.

I know it's considered bad form to ask what the artist intended with the piece, but I was just curious if this is a statement against the over-medication of children in our society as an alternative to discipline, and the resulting stifling of creativity that results?
Or am I reading too much into it?

You're not reading too much into it at all.
The idea came from the recent over-diagnosis of ADD in our culture. Instead of changing teaching methods we chose to drug our children. Children these days are used to high-speed fast-cutting information.. yet most teaching environments are sterile and slow paced. Thats what Daydream aims to comment on.
I tried to keep it vague so you could draw that conclusion yourself, rather than preaching the concept.
Im glad you got it. Some people don't. Interestingly enough... from those I've shown, the older the viewer.. the less they get it.
I like to think that proves my point.

Is it? Why?

Ok it does not have a halfdressed 'babe' in it. It also isn't funny. And the character talk, walk nor jump. But it shows that thoughts have gone into content and into a search for orginality. The bit of character animation that the clip uses is properly done (I like the teachers snakelike movement) and the flow of the dream is very wel executed. The best of it is is that the clip has a nice story flow from start till end.
If it was up to me you could put this on the frontpage.

im flattered.
though i almost went with "hald-dressed 'babe'" over the word TREE. And I cut the part where the professor stepped on a rake.

That's probably the reason why it won't be front cover ;)

Is it just me or has the temperature in this thread just dropped DRAMATICALLY...
Off to work on a model of a large-breasted asian battle matron...
I kid! I kid!
Seriously though... think it would make the front cover?

A HA!
The music put you to sleep just like the teacher was puting the boy to sleep. I wanted that ambient droning feeling. The only sense of a beat comes during his dream. I wish I coulda found something more sharply contrasted though.
Yer supposed to feel his boredom in the beginning and end.. not in the middle.. I'll look into that.
Thanks for the input!:wavey:

Someone on another list commented that the professor looks like Dick Cheney.
I thought it was damn funny.

I thought it was really good. Nice job! I think you were great with the color and camera work when he actually visualized the tree. The part of the clip with the cells were way too organized and neat. You should make them uneven and bunched. Really cool though. To comment on the music, I thought it fitted in really well but it could be more upbeat during his dream. I love the facial expression on his face after he gets his shot. I have seen many faces like that in class. Great concept.
