View Full Version : Maya $tudent version quibble/question...
alias 06-04-2003, 07:37 AM Hi All,
I have a question...
Why can i get a Max 5.1 & Character Studio 4 - 6 month student license for $99 (australian) and to get a student version of Maya Complete it would cost me close to $1700 !! ?? (thats for 12 months) :hmm:
Why is this so...i dont know of ANY students who have a spare $1700 .... Its more of a 'low income earning' version than a 'student' version...as student by definition means ZERO money :p
Anyone know A|W's reasons for this ??
Cheers all

Maya PLE is free and is aimed to students.

yes...but if your are a student and you are using real versions of maya at college/uni...during college/uni hours...you cant do any work with your PLE at home on the 'real' maya files...
I think its an area that A|W need to address ...
The PLE is great...but it doesn't cover the area described above...the student version does...but at prohibative costs
cheers

Sorry i haven't got back to your email been pretty busy/crazy...
You can open normal maya files in PLE but i don't think you can go the other way.
You are right about the limitation of PLE, did not think about it.
I'm wondering where you got the $1700 price because on A|W's site they offer a student license for complete for just under $600. Still a lot of cash for a student though.

I was quoted today from my local distributor that Maya Complete student was around $1700 ( i didnt ask for 'hard and fast amounts' because it was just rediculous...) and I just purchased Max 5.1 & CS4 for $99 (6 month license)
All prices aussie dollars ... no jokes...just facts
cheers
PS: here is the site i bought Max & CS from: http://www.dbd.com.au/studentpricing.htm (option #1)

In the US, 3dsmax edu version costs the same as Maya. That is an exceptionally low price you guys get over there.

whats the difference between NZ dollars and aussie? cuz i know that nz and canadian dollars are pretty close together.
600usd would be about 900-1000 canadian?!.. if not less.
plus the licenses are permanent now i think. i remember they made some changes to their student licensing not too long ago.

I think the pricing discrepancies come from shipping and probably reseller markup. It sorta sucks. And i think if you try and buy online from AW that they throw you back to your local reseller. BAH!
