OK, I'm learning DF, and what I'm trying to think how to go about is if I, say, want to use a light rays effect on some text, and just want the rays, not the text, to show up, what kind of loop do I need to make? I know some effects let you output only the effect if you want, but many just output the effect layered over the input image. Is there a way around this that I'm blind to?

Depending how how you are creating the rays there are a number of ways to remove the original text.

I suggest using a branch of your un-rayed text to boolean (subtract) from the rayed version. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
