View Full Version : HARDCORE MODELING!: Stan Winston Tribute: Spinosaurus Jurassic Park III
DogBreath 09-05-2008, 01:45 PM Here's my attempt at a lowpoly Spinosaurus, there are some edges that are bad topology, but I'll attempt fixes on those if I have time, seeing the HMC is 1/2 over. This is my first attempt at a import into zbrush so I'm learning as I go. I'll work on some more of the head tommorrow and then go to the zbrush and clean the layout up. Any suggestions welcome.

I've done some work on the feet, hands and head. There are a few more poly's now and I fixed the main edgeloops. I changed the image size, to a smaller one to make it easier to see, it was too late after a 20 hour day to do it last night, and I just wanted to start my post with an image that showed some progress.

I think the feet are too big and the fingers on the hands need to be splayed, but I think I better move onto ZBrush unless there is any feedback or suggestions.

Got it into ZBrush and tweaked a few forms, still not there, but its closer.
Anyway this is my progress so far.

Looking very good so far. I like the head and feets alot. And the shape and polyflow should be perfect for a final mesh.
I did have some trouble finding good refs, but isnt the torso/belly a little thin underneath? And maybe feets being a little too big aswell.
Keep up the work

Thanks, you are right about the feet, I had layed them out with another bone structure them realized the error. I have made some changes to the feet the stomach and head.
I tried transposing the hand and learnt a bit about tranpose and otherwise gave myself finger positions to fix before I can add details. Also messed around the lower leg muscles and went to far...........learning heaps though.
I'm assuming theres no other suggestions because I've jumped around from forms and blocking thats wrong, to details on top of the wrong stuff and its just to much to comment on fixing. I thought I would use Lion lower and Horse upper leg muscles as guidance from Lanteri's Sculpting Animals today, but got sidetracked and did'nt have time to focus on that.(should have stopped) I'll try that with one other session tomorrow and then attempt a finish of something better than I have now next weekend. This is my first ZBrush model apart from a skull tutorial.

I have reached the limits of my machine, so this is as far as I can go for now.
There are lots of things I would like to fix on this, but I feel that starting
fresh and using a better lowpoly would probably improve the result, and
now I know how many poly's my lowpoly model can have.
I am going to try to get a displacemement map off it into Max and
pose it, that will have to be later in the week.
Things I would have changed.
The feet and hands were incorrect and I had to backtrack to get the right layout. The toes and fingers are attached to 3 other bones unlike a wrist and a foot setup.
The sail is to thick and I should have created a morph and tried to thin it but don't have time right now to check how thats done.
The hind legs have to much muscle on them, and
I should have modelled the mouth open so I could do the teeth (Will try to rectify that while posing it).
I need to practice laying in muscles and getting their order and definition.

Update some Painting:
Tried painting today, missed the deadline, while at work.
Congrats to all those who made it, some really amazing work, which inspired me
to join in and I learnt heaps and enjoyed it alot.
Still a few things to do and only a quick paint, would like to work on the texture map out of ZBrush and put a real eye into the head and pose it. I'm not sure if I can pose it now without losing the details...any help. Crits and comments welcome.

Thanks Shletten, I wanted to put it on a base, but I have started HMC17, so it will have to wait until I can figure out how thats done. Have you tried ZBrush.
Here's another better shot.

Well yes of course I tried it but I haven't had enough time to become good and in fact it is always my base modeling that is wrong. I'll have to try some time later, I don't have that much free time recently and I might lose my PC so that doesn't let me many opportunities to practice. And I think I am more of compositor/editing kind of guy than a modeler, I spend my time in After Effects way too much probably.
Nice progress! :) Keep up the good work.
