People often ask me whether I use references. The answer is, yes and no--depending on the piece. For me, I'm comfortable either way. For example, I painted Blood Siren without any references at all, while Mood1 had reference. I personally don't think using reference or not has too much bearing on how successful the piece is--IF you are an experienced artist and knows what you're doing--even when without reference. The mistake I often see many beginners make is that they haven't built a strong enough foundation to work without reference, so the discrepancy between their referenced and non-referenced work is very dramatic.

really enjoy your work.
you are right about the reference issue, the best reference is to paint from life, not from photos, but to get out there and see things in their true form. Thats one of the digital disadvantages i guess.
You have put a lot of time into your work, and they are really nicely rendered, admirable stuff.
