Hi All,

Well i'm a 3D animator and the reason i've decided to do this is well. I've had a really nice Wacom Intuos and never really used it. I also want to improve my art as i really enjoy it.
So i'm kind starting out with really drawing with my wacom and decided to start from the Beginning with the Gestures.
I also really appreciate crit cause you only learn from your own mistakes.

So here are all my gestures in order that i did them in.
The first 2 are of figurines i have. And the last is from a Photo.

Hi there, nice sb start!

It's really good to "search for the right line" while you are sketching, but I would recommend that when you think you found the right line, to draw it once and avoid re-drawing it. This is something that takes a lot of practice because the build up happens almost automatically but the final line must be drawn very deliberately and then one has to move to the next form. Thàt is the hard part. (I've been trying it for 2 years now and I still screw up lol)

I would also recommend to keep drawing from reference - be it from life or from photograph, painting, etc - as well as from imagination.

Have fun!

Thanks Johan

I'll try do more of the single line thing, i've always had that problem of redrawing my lines.
I'll make a big effort to just do one if i can or just go over it once.
Thanks for the advice. I'll keep at it.

I use to drawing gestures the really messy way. When i first started we weren't allowed to lift our pencils. But wow that was almost 10 years ago.:hmm:

I got Stanchfield's notes a friend was nice enough to give it to me as a book.
Very diffrent to what i'm use to. Been reading through that when i can.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my work.

I understand.
The short strokes break the flow of the image though.

I've not heard of the book you mention.
If you can, try to watch Glen Vilppu's gesture dvd... in which he talks about flow.
It was a revelation to me to see him draw.

The book is called: Gesture drawing for Animators - Walt Stanchfiled, edited by Leo Brodie
Walt worked at disney and always wanted to make a book of this but never got around to it.
So it was edited together by Leo Bordie. Very nice book even the read of it.

As for Vilppu's gesture stuff i was actually thing about that after your last message. I'll get it from my friend to watch it again. But i agree Glen is amazing to watch.
I love the way he explaing his stuff, i'm not sure if it was that one but he has a cube and a ball in a sock and he explains how to use line off that.

Awesome stuff, so simple to understand.:arteest: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)

welcome!

well, there are a few problems with your sketches.
the proportions on the last one are off and your lines are really messy ...
have you ever considered using some kind of measurement to get the accurate proportions? ive seen one method in loomis' "eye of the painter", though i dont use it myself and im sure there are at least a few others as well.
in my experience its quite hard to get a clean line with the wacom, because the surface on which you draw is really smooth and slippery. i find it much easier to draw with a real pencil. you can try it out at least and see which is more comfortable for you.

bye

Thanks for the pointers Taole.

As for what you mentioned, no i have never used any sort of measurment. Loomis "eye of the painter" i'll look it up.
What do you mean by chain line?
I usually draw with paper and pencil i just feel that i would like to get use to my table more. Although i haven't put my drawing pad aside. Saying that i haven't been to commited to my drawing lately which is why i'm here.

I'd really like to step it up a big notch before the end of the year.
I'll really look in to what you said i'll try some sotuff out tonight and put it up.

hmm ... im pretty sure i havent mentioned anything about a "chain line" - partly because i dont even know what it could mean myself. XD im guessing u were reading too fast and read "clean lines" wrong.

im sorry i thought youre not using pencil to draw, now that i read your posts again i really dont know what i was thinking
have you drawn with values till now? drawing with values will help u see the form inside the outlines. concentrating on values will shift your attention away from lines and with time youll naturally avoid excessive outlining ... just my experience, i had that problem myself. ^^

cheers

Hey Taole

Sorry yeah i was reading alittle fast and read Chain lines not clean lines.

Well i have done some value drawing in the past not on my wacom.
( i'm assuming you refering to only drawing in shadows lights and dark )

So you suggesting that i try follow the book by Andrew Loomis to help me out?

Are you also suggesting that i should rather use pencil and paper for the gestures?
Not my tablet?

*This is good thanks*:applause:

Assignment 2:

Well i went a little slower on this one. Tried harder to focus on my lines and not to go over then to much unless adding shadow.

Was also tring to do better with my proportions. That still needs some work.

Well here it is...

What do ya think? :curious:

Hey Jeffrey,

You already took the advice to go with cleaner lines, the last sketches are much better:thumbsup: ! I know the notes of Walt Stanchfield and agree, nice to read and some useful hints...though I'm not sure if this is the right thing to start some serious figure drawing with, especially if you want to improve your proportions. Maybe you'll find the traditonal anatomy related books more helpful. Have you already seen this thread: http://http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=202&t=257424 about recommended books? And in general some of the threads under the topic "References, Resources, and Supplies" may be interesting for you...

Keep sketching and posting!:)

Cheers,

-sabrina

i think andrew loomis' books are really good for understanding principles and theories, but i wouldnt stick too close to the examples given in the books, his sketches are a lil too ... hm ... commercialised? just a little. (peace to those loomis fans out there :D ) and i would get other books for anatomy, this topic comes too short in his book "figure drawing", but for the basics its absolutely great ... really easy to understand.
about the medium ... i think it doesnt matter what u use, just dont stick to one and deny the others. how about painting? try painting only with values on the wacom. itll be a positive experience for sure. (at least in the long run) if u already did, post your work to get some feedback. ^^
btw, thanks for looking at my thread jeffrey! :)
the last sketches are much better.

Hi All

Thanks Rebecca i appreciate the time take to look at my stuff.

Well i thought i would do something alittle longer this time to really study and get things right.

So these are from photo reference.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll101/Memorist/Anatomy%20study/drawings_0002.jpg

And then this hand is drawn out of my head. i've just started reading one of Burne Hogarth's books on dynamic hands, this is my first attempt.
As you can see these are all done with pencil and paper and not pc tablet.
:(

I'll get there.

Thought i would get together so modelling stuff and well i have never modelled a car before so i found one it's the Mazda Furai - it was designed for Le Mans ( 24 hr race ) Still got a long way to go i'm in not rush, doing it in my spare time so it might take a few months.

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll101/Memorist/Furai/Furaiwip1.jpg

As for the drawing side of things i'm going to try out that 50 faces in a month one.
I worked it out you need to do 12 - 13 drawings a week. So that's almost 2 - 3 a day.

Its going be a busy one. I've got a whole bunch of pics I've downloaded already so i'll be using most of those as i won't be too accesible to the net for the next few weeks.

Hey hope you all have an awsome Christmas and New Years!!!

Hey there Guys.

Was wondering if anyone could give me some guide lines on how to improve my character work.

Should i be doing more muscle study, if so what should i bee looking at when i do my studies?

At the moment ( when i get time ) i'm just drawing from images i've download from the net.
I'm not a big painter user.
I do need to start working that though.

I do try do gestures and lines of motion to warm up before i draw.
Any reference i should be getting?

And what of the work shops should i be looking at, there are alot of them.
I did some face work just haven't had the time to scan them in. will do so in the next 2 weeks or so when i finish the project i'm on.

Frankly, becoming a good draughtsman is not a matter of weeks, or even months... it's a matter of daily practice during many years...

Great things to study are human anatomy (that alone can keep one busy for a lifetime), nature, (architecture (perspective) and work from old and modern masters in general...

When studying anatomy, it helps a lot when you understand the function of the bones and muscles you draw. So it's important not to just draw them, but also to read about them.
Good luck, and have fun :)

I know i should be doing my own thing but i'm still working on that.

i want to colour this up in photoshop any one know of a good tutorial to do the line tracing?
I really suck with colour in PS so any tips would be appreciated.
