View Full Version : Maya crashes when trying to save as .ma (maya ascii)

I have some scenes that came from a older version of maya that I've opened in 2008. Now when I try to save them out as .ma (so I can edit them in a text editor to open them up in a older verison of maya) maya crashes. Now it only affects the scenes in question, I can save out a new scene as a .ma no problem.

Any ideas or ways of troubleshooting this? Any other ways besides editing a ascii to get a maya file to open in a older version?

Thanks.

Try manually deleting any crashing nodes that might give Maya a diarrhea and then try again:) You might also try optimizing the scene. Cheers.

Sorry, what do you mean by this?

Empty nodes, unused shaders, anything that might make Maya hiccup when saving an ASCII file. What does the scene consist of? Polygons, NURBS, rig?

Simple scene overall. Simple low poly rigged character that is animated.

Well I went through and tried to delete everything that seemed unused and still crash. So I don't know

Select all your top nodes and export selected items as an ascii instead.

If that dosen't work, export it as a binary first. Then make a new scene, save it out as a maya ascii, import your binary file (don't use namespaces), then resave.

you're using Maya 2008 SP1 ?
there should be a CER report, did you send it in ? with comments,
a crash log file would be your TMP directory, may give an indication of what is crashing
could always enter a Maya bug with a scene file to reproduce the problem

Do you have Microsoft office installed? If you do, uninstall it and try saving. This was happening to me till ASWdesign informed me that 'Groove', that is installed with Office, messes it up.
If that solves it, you can just select to not install Groove when you re install office.

Hope that helps. It drove me crazy trying to figure it out when i couldn't save as an ma.

In my case it used to work when I created a new scene and drag-n-dropped the 'corrupted' file from windows explorer directly into maya.
