hello all!

just had a question that's been plaguing me for some time. for the outlines in my digital paintings i like to use 'grainy cover pencil 2' as it has a nice sketchy effect. however, whenever i downsize the picture for posting it seems to smooth out the grain and remove the effect of it entirely.

i've tried upping the dpi before downsizing, sharpening the image, but these do not seem to help. i have read that painter's zoom can make your image appear more jagged then it really is, is this possibly what i'm experiencing?

thank you!

the texture in your pencil lines is expressed by pixels- when you down size, there is no longer enough pixels to express the texture so painter calculates an average tone. the only way to keep the texture is to keep the image big.

this has nothing to do with the jaggy zoom in painter.

First, DPI has no effect whatever on a digital image. An image at 1 DPI displays exactly the same as one at 20000 DPI.

All you can do to bring out the grain is a bit of sharpening. What I recommend is that you duplicate the canvas to a layer and sharpen that layer using a setting of between 2 and 3 (sorry can't be more specific, I'm not at my home PC). Then alter the transparency of the layer until you get the desired effect and drop it to the canvas.

EDIT: If you have PSP X2 (and maybe other packages do it too) you can specify sharpening & anti-aliasing proprties at the same time as you resample the image.
