Hi, I'm trying to do lipsync for an animation in Maya. It'd be a lot easier for me to hear sound while I scrub the cursor of the timeline. Like in AE when you hold down the "alt" key and drag your mouse on the timeline.

I tried holding "k" but it doesn't work. I also tried the script at Maya's help documents, but all I hear is pops and clicks. I'm using maya 2008, am I doing something wrong???

All help is appreciated
thanks

btw

The sound is already on the timeline but I can't scrub. Also, I can't even see the sound in waveform because the green waveform representation appears very very small. Maybe the problem starts from there.

Even though I've checked the sound, and it's loud, it appears very small in the timeline that it's almost invisible. I tried exporting the sound out of AE even louder, but it doesn't matter. Waveform still displays very thin.

When I press play or make a playblast the sound is there and it's loud. I can't figure out why it appears very thin on the timeline. Anyone can think of smtg?

thanks again.

Hello there. If you can't hear the sound at all when you scrube you should set the playback speed to real-time instead of play every frame.

If that doesn't help then you should check your file format. As far as I know, Maya can only handle .wav files and I think .aiff (which I think is the default Mac sound file format).

Hope this helps :)

thank you for the replies..

I think I know where the problem is. I used another sound file, a song, and it works fine. The original sound track I'm lipsyncing onto is a well and clear recorded Mp3 file at 44.000 khz 32-bit stereo. I can see the clear waveform representation in AE, and it's loud enough.

When I import the sound into Maya as 44.00khz 16-bit stereo, or any other setting, the sound is still loud and clear during playback/playblast; but, the waveform representation is so small on the timeline that it's almost invisible, and all I hear is few quiet clicks and pops during scrubbing...

It's like Maya doesn't read and view that particular sound file as is, until I playback or playblast.

My playback speed in Maya is realtime, I used different settings for both wav and aiff file types and the problem is still there. I made the file extra loud in AE, but it didn't help anyway. Don't know if something is wrong with my sound file, or if Maya is not reading it properly. If anyone had a similar problem and can assist me, it's most appreciated

Something similar to this has happened to me, and this has worked for me:

1. Open the file in a sound editing program like Audacity (it's free and quite handy).
2. Make any edits you may want. You may also want to change the frequency to something lower, or maybe
3. Export it as a .wav file. I would suggest changing the name of the file a little bit so you can tell it apart from the original, plus then you don't lose the original (just in case).
4. Import the new file into Maya.

Like I said, my problem was similar, but it was different (my sound would just not be there, no waveform, nothing in a playblast, but the file was still listed in the timeline. This even happened in an existing scene where the sound had worked perfectly fine before:argh:). This may not work for you, but it's certainly worth a try.

Hope it helps.
