Great character. Toon shader works really well with her. How well does it hold up on other angles of the face?

That certainly looks nice. Might I ask which software and shader/render system u used?

I find that the harderst part of cell shading a character is that you lose expressiveness in the face. This is OBviously not the case here, this is tremendously expressive and it looks perfectly natural at the same time. I love it!!

Great, Great work!

I guess cellshading is your thing (Cellshader...duh!). So how do you get so much expressiveness in cell shaded?
Do you use morph targets and testrender untill it looks right cellshaded no matter what the model looks like?

curious about your process... any tips/advice on cells?

keep up the good work, and keep posting!

I have renders showing this model from different angles here:

I also have a Quicktime turnaround that one can scrub through here:

LightWave 7.5 and the default renderer. For "paint," I used the Super Cel Shader. For "ink lines," I used LightWave's Edges. I also used Adobe Photoshop to create the color texture maps.

No joke, the biggest thing that helped me improve the expressiveness of my celshading was AAI (http://www.mpsc839.org/_Classes/Classes_h/classesFRM.html) drawing classes, especially the Gesture Drawing for Animation class.

I did do a lot of test renders while refining the pose, to make sure the rendered ink lines pointed in the right directions. I also did a lot of test renders when tweaking the face. The morph targets are celshader-friendly, so I didn't have to worry about intersection costing me an ink line. I first roughed out the facial expression with the sliders until I was 99% sure I had what I wanted, then hit F9 to render. I refined it from there.

I have celshader tips and tricks on my website:
http://www.celshader.com/learning.html

I also recommend studying cel animation and "how to draw" books as much as possible. Photo reference helps me when modeling/surfacing a photoreal model; good drawing and cel reference helps me when trying to recreate the look of a cel using 3D geometry. :)

Good job, but personally.. I really hate Cel Shading, sorry for that  if you are wondering why, it is because of that new Nintendo Zelda game the fart walker or whatever, it just totally ruined my impression of the company and the amazing Cel Shading technique I was so fond of before.

Hey, that's not fair! I hope you give celshading another chance one day. :)

I haven't seen much of Windwalker, myself, so I can't say what I think of the game. My biggest complaint right now is that they made Link a toddler with light blond hair -- I'm used to seeing him as a much older elf with dark, reddish-blond hair.
